I ordered all the parts for my front brakes and also got the self adjusting rebuild kit because the adjusters were cheaper as a package than buying seperat.

Problem....the adjusters are different than the original non-self adjusting versions.

Is it a big deal to go ahead and convert to full self adjusting brakes?

What are the pros and cons?

No one will know the difference unless the brake drum is off.

The self adjusters work by adjusting the brakes from backing up and stepping on the brakes. Normal driving will keep them adjusted just fine with the self adjusters. If you don't have them then you need to take the rubber plug at the bottom of the backing plate out and turn the adjuster wheel with a screw driver about every 5000 miles or so.

I noticed the new self adjusters don't line up with the original plugs. The adjuster gear is more centered, where my original adjuster gear was to the left or right of the assembly.

It doesn't matter because you have no need for the plug with self adjusters.

The main reason for not using the old adjusters and the rest of the od hardware is basically because everything is new or restored.

The backing plates are powdercoated, new shoes, springs, hoses, wheel cylinders, etc., etc....

I just didn't realize the the self-adjusting and the non-self adjusting were 2 different designs. If I would have paid more attention in the beginning, i would have ordered the correct replacement. I just figured that since I had all the hardware in the kit, I might as well go ahead and convert.

Slightly off topic, but will an 8 3/4" 11" drum brake setup including backing plates be the same as for a Dana?

The manual adjusting kits are still available ask your local parts store if they can order a #12 kit in carlson or the like in their brand I believe the manuel adjuster might be #1500 I RECENTLY DID A SET OF EARLY B BODY 11".

I did the same thing on my 68 roadrunner. Everything works just fine, but to fine tune the brakes from the back, the holes don't line up with the self adjusters.
