Are you gonna run a standard over bore or something off the wall... if its a standard over bore then Diamond.. they will do 3 changes before they call it custom and each change is cheap

Might need something for a BB that doesn't match anyone's stocking part specs. Favorite piston companies seem to change with the wind... so which way is the wind blowing these days? Thanks, Brad Since your post title asks for best value http://racetecpistons.com/pages/autotec.php

Each company has its followers. I wouldn't turn down a piston from Mahle, JE, Diamond, Wiseco, Racetech, CP, Icon. Probe pistons would be plenty good for my stock block non-racing needs. It feels like they're a little down the pecking order, maybe not quite as good. The ProTru and SRP lines are the lower priced lines from Wiseco and JE.
Then you have the old standards like Bill Miller and Venolia and Arias.
I believe there's a startup out there somewhere but cannot remember the name.
I think you either go with a Diamond and configure it to your liking, or you use a shelf stock piston from the others and build the engine around it.
If this engine is going to be used hard, you may consider finding out if single replacement pistons are available, or how many is their minimum. Or buy a set of 10 to start out.
ADDITION: I just checked out the Racetec/Autotec page and it looks like they're deserving to be in the mix. Here's why: Company was started by former owner of JE pistons, and, FREE CHANGES to a shelf stock piston. Compression height and bore were mentioned. They say anything that doesn't require a change to the forging can be accommodated. Racetec is 2618 alloy Autotec is 4032.

I think CP would be my choice for a custom piece.

I think CP would be my choice for a custom piece. IF I had to buy custom it would be CP... I used them for my W-9.. they made it to the head for 14.1:1... but if he just needs things moved a bit it would be Diamond and save on the price tag

All the big names piston manufactures are good, I use to be a JE fan till it came time to get my custom pistons and they let me down on price for the build. I now am a Wiseco fan as they stood up to the plate and delivered in quality and price.

R. I'm under the impression the Calvert Bros. owned J&E and sold it with a 5 year no compete claused over 12 yrs ago that expired before they bought all new equiptment and opened thier new piston making company under the name CP (Calevet Performance )pistons. I seem to remeber that they bought Carillo connecting rods several years later also With all the buying out and reopening of performance manufacturers in our industry I can't keep up with who is where and what they now make and sell

I've used JE and Ross most recently. I've had my hands on some Icon, Mahle, and Bill Miller, so I've got a reasonable idea about those brands. I own a set of CPs, and they are the nicest looking of all, plus they're very light. If cost were no object, it would be custom CPs... but they are freakin' expensive. That's why I'm asking about other options.

Thanks, Brad Are you ordering the pistons yourself? If so, you're just lunch meat for the wolves! I usually have my buddy at the engine shop order my pistons so I can at least get jobber price. He also knows the guy on the custom order desk so my order doesn't get "lost in the shuffle". I tried to order a set of custom pistons from Mahle a few weeks back. This was for a magazine article motor and they still never bothered to return my calls. I think I left 3 or 4 messages before I gave up. Ended up using Diamond for that project since their sales guy was willing to pick up the phone and take on the project.
