I'm building a 572 Hemi for my friend, he bought it a few years ago and now wants more power, so a 8-71 blower kit is added. The engine already had blower pistons, the CR is now 8.8:1, and Edelbroc/mopar perf aluminum heads slightly ported. However the current cam in the engine proved to be extremely mild in my opinion. It's a hydraulic flat tappet, Racer Brown EH-20 C. With only 220 degree at .050" and 264 advertised t's no wonder it only made 620 hp in the dyno.

So, anyone have a cam recommendation for the coming supercharged version? Would like to stay with a hydraulic flat tappet.

Rich Nedbal wrote the book on Hemis. And has a ton of experience with both N/A and boosted Hemis. Plus, he is Comp Cams rep. Discuss your needs with him and let him spec your cam. He spec'd my blower cam and it was dead on.

I would not recommend staying with a hydraulic flat tappet cam. Valve springs are too weak for that valve train to begin with and they are fighting the 2.x" valves which are trying to stay open under boost. Feel free to send me an email and we'll come up a good solution.

The intention in this case is mainly having the engine supercharged, not to make world records. I agree, it would be wise to upgrade to roller, but it just isn't in the bdget at this point. And another factor is hurry, have to go with an off the shelf grind. I believe the boost used will be around .5-.6 bar which is sround 7-9 psi. The effect on valve spring pressure is about 20-30 lbs closed. I guess we may end up using the current cam if it seems to become too complicated.

I'm with Rich on this.......need to get away from the hyd lifters.
Either of the two smallest Crane solids would work okay, but I think the chances are slim they actually have one of those on the shelf.
Probably worth an email though.
Aside from that, Comp or Bullet will probably be the quickest turn around for a custom.

A solid flat tappet cam is fine for this application. But I would still not use a hydraulic flat tappet. A solid flat tappet cam is the same price as the hydraulic flat tappet and the lifters are about the same price too. You're not saving any money by staying with a hydraulic flat tappet cam. The solid cam will rev better and not be as shaky at the higher RPMs. I know this is a mild street motor, but you still have to consider the characteristics of a HEMI valve train and that one time your rev the pi$$ out of it. If you're worried about setting valve lash periodically, that's a myth. Lash won't change much unless something else is moving around. My two cents have been spent :^)
