I'll ask over here since probably more guys have experience. Ran into a new in the box pair of these that are 18yrs old. The version with std port size but raised intake, the chambers are smallish and heart shaped. Any idea what the chambers should be CC wise? What they were advertised as? anything in particular to inspect on them for flaws. I know some had issues, any help with knowlege would be appreciated

Advertised is 78cc. Mine were ported version, with polished chambers, they checked out to be 84cc.

Check the foundry casting ID. The early "Winters" casting were the poor ones to avoid. There should be a casting date label somewhere on them.

Post a pic of the foundry mark and we can verify good vs bad.

Got pics?
- Foundry symbol on top of head
- Chamber
- Intake & exhaust bowls

That would help to narrow down the "vintage" of the heads.

If you haven't read this thread from the old Moparts Tech Archives lined from the home page, it's probably worth your time, too.

Thanks guys. I have received a couple pics but oddly enough not one straight down into the top of the heads. I've asked for it but hasn't come over yet. If he avoids that view perhaps there's a reason. They're reasonably priced, but if they're more trouble to correct or make solid enough to be dependable I won't bother. If I can get a look at them or more pics I'll post up. Appreciate the help! As I recall the winters marks I've seen are a snowflake with a "w" in the center is that correct?

Have someone who is really good with heads look them over very thoroughly before handing over any $$$.
They can easily cost too much to straighten out to be worthwhile.

As for chamber volume, the only ones I recall actually being close to the 78cc spec were the last version from the Zeus foundry. The others were all over the place...... Up to around 92cc's.

IMO, they would have to be priced VERY attractively to be worth messing with them, unless you have the capabilities to do most of the work yourself.

Having been one who paid the extra $$$ to straighten out a variety of QC issues, etc., "priced VERY attractively" would mean basically FREE.

Avoid Stage VI heads unless they are free and you can work on them yourself. There are too many better options.

I agree, remember seeing a raw set of castings at Summit and they were very rough and unfinished. They are decent after you Finnish them up Porting, machining ETC. Better be close to free IMO too.

I was able to score a set of Chapman ported heads with new T&D rockers and shafts for a blown 500 inch wedge.

Check out these flow charts and don't forget to save them!!

IIRC that's the Zeus foundry mark.

The Winters is the W inside the snowflake.

I could be wrong about the first, I'm sure someone will tell me if I am.

The Zeus heads have the word "Zeus" cast right into the head and had the least issues.
Someone will have chime in on this...... But as I remember it, the Chapman stage vi's were cast by the Zeus foundry as well, although those were their own casting.

I'm going to look them over in the morning so I'll know more. I'll share my findings. More to follow.

So, they are Zeus heads. The best of the group, but you should still have them checked out.
And, you'd still need to be into them pretty cheap to make it worthwhile.
Also, be sure your expectations about what you can do with those heads(without spending more than you would on other heads) fit your needs and budget.
