Thanks , you guys are awesome. I put the light socket in but where does the switch mount? in the service manual drawing it looks like a tab on the lip of the trunk but the original car and mine have none. before my car was repaired I remember the switch right in the corner of the trunk gutter. that was not right I'm sure. The light I have has no switch in the light itself.

the light I have has no mercury switch . it is a 2 wire socket I guess it is not the correct light but it was in the car when I got it (1987) As I said I remember a push switch (like a door jam switch) in the corner of the trunk gutter I knew that was not right. If a mercury switch light is correct I have a light from some other mop. It's a convertible if it makes a difference.

It's a mercury switch inside the socket. "Mercury switches, that's heavy s**t. I haven't seen anything like this since the war."

I'm not doubting what you guys are telling me but the plug on the light asm. in your pic is not the same as the plug on my harness that is in my car. The harness is the original harness that the car was built with. I'm sure. It has a single square spade male plug not the twin pin with a clear/white plug. like I said does it make a difference because its a ragtop? I can't find it in mt service manual.

The switch you are talking about is commonly seen on B-bodies. Maybe you are recalling another car? Any e-body light assembly I have seen has had the "switch" built into the housing. If you do not have the mercury style switch, then you have the wrong light. There is no tab on the rain gutter that I could see that would accommodate a push switch. Someone most likely added the tab on your car if you saw it there before restoration. Probably to be able to use the wrong switch.

The factory 71 convertible pics I supplied are the same as the hardtop prints regarding the trunk wiring/light, plus the pic Colin has shown of the trunk harness/light, 2 leads pink and yellow, make sure your looking at the right ends of the harness, they are displayed in the above factory prints mike
