I cannot find much on the laws so I am looking for some help. I have a 1969 Roadrunner, with a cracked dash. I have a dash from a Coronet. Can I swap the VIN plate from my dash to the Coronet dash without possibly getting in trouble since this is for restoration purposes and it is the VIN that is suppose to be in the car. I am new to the restoration game so please any advice will help tremendously. Thank you in advance. BEEP BEEP

It might be easier if you posted pics of the cracked dash and exactly what you intend to do.

Then people could give you a better measured response.

It's really simple if you are just swapping dash pads and replacing the original Roadrunner VIN to the original Roadrunner with the new dash pad you are fine. You get in trouble when you swap VINs from one car to another.

Pads are swappable, no need to touch the Vin.

When you say "with a cracked dash" are you talking about the dash pad or the actual metal dash frame?

If it's the dash pad, it's a bolt on part and will have no affect on the metal dash frame that the VIN tag is connected to.

If it's the metal dash frame (also a bolt in part), replace it and use the correct style rivets to attach the VIN tag to the replacement metal dash frame.

You're simply replacing a bad part and re-attaching the original VIN tag to the car it came on.

be aware the windshield needs to be out to replace the steel dash frame
&
the 1969 b-body dash frame is one year only, A/C frames are different as are "rallye gauge" frames found in Super Bees, some Coronet R/Ts, and Chargers

Windshield does NOT need to come out, but if the windshield is in place the fasteners must be cut and reinstalled upside down with shorter screws.

The dash "pad" is bolted to the dash frame that has the VIN. If it is the pad that needs replacing, then no need to remove the VIN plate fron the dash frame. If the metal dash frame is cracked, it might be less expensive to weld it unless it is totally rusted out because the "correct" style vin tag rivets are pretty expensive, I think over $20 each?

Like someone else said, make sure they are the same style gauge set ups or then you'll really raise questions and headache for yourself.

You can get the correct factory (NOS) rivets from ECS for $29 for the pair.

I have had several 68 and 69 b-bodies apart. I have never seen the metal frame cracked. Pads, yes. Frame never. I have seen some rust in the corner from leaking windshield. But usually you don't see that until you have the windshield out and seal removed. The VIN is attached to the metal frame. So if replacing the soft vinyl pad, then no need to touch the metal.

With that said, I think all you need to do is replace the pad. there are five speed nuts (stamped steel nuts) that hold it on. A 1/4" ratchet with an assortment of extensions and swivels will allow you to reach them. If I recall, the hardest ones are where the instrument cluster is.

Has anyone restored a VIN? I have a car where the dash (and VIN) were painted all the same color.

Assuming you actually need to replace the frame and not just the pad; take the window out and do it right.

2 cents,

Dave
