As the title suggests, I've had my '98 neon for about 5 years now. Within the past year, I've noticed that anytime it rains or there is moisture (melting snow, wet roads, etc.) the car will stutter and backfire and then it will throw the check engine light for Cylinder 4 misfire. This might happen once or twice a day when it is raining or whatever, but once it goes through its cycle the car runs fine, no backfiring, nothing.

So far I have tried a new coil pack, new plugs, new plug wires, and I even had my brother take a look at the wiring harness but he didn't seem to see anything that would trigger it.

I had an '05 SRT Neon that would throw upstream 02 sensor engine codes in the past, so I don't know if this is a neon thing or what haha.

Just looking to see if anyone has experienced this before? Maybe give me some suggestions and we can go from there?

Thanks in advance!!

Use a spray bottle to mist water over the engine on a dry night. If you see sparking from anywhere, that's your culprit.

Intermittent problems suck don't they? Since you have replaced several items already, I would have the ECM checked as the coil drivers may be the issue. I had a similar issue on an 04 SRT4 and it was one of the coil drivers and a $175 fix.

So was there something they did with the ECM, or did you just get a new one? Just curious so I know what to expect?

Thank you!!

03 PT cruiser gets a misfire on cyl1.It happens different times.Ran good wires IE Autolites and Autolite plugs.Tried Champion plugs NGK plugs and 2 more sets of wires.Always the same cyl 1 misfire sometimes.Had a carbon track on the plug that looked like a crack.I even use Mopar wires and changed 1 and 4 same thing wire or plug change. Not always but sometimes. Finally used a set of Advance House wires.Been on 2 yearsand so far so good.Still has the same plugs that I had a misfire on with hibuck wires.Rocky

I pulled the ecm and sent it to a shop for analysis. I will dig up the paperwork and post or PM you the contact information.

Company was ECM Repair Now located in Illinois. The diagnostic was $20 at that time in 2014 but you have to pull the ECM and ship it to them of course.
