Mi.
I am installing new ARP 3" wheel studs in my axles. My question is what size smaller does the hole need to be safely for the knurl to properly be secured?? I have Moser axles and the tech said the holes are drilled at .656 for a .665 knurl and the new studs are .680. I can get a 43/64 drill bit that will open the hole to .671. Is that going to be tight enough or could I go a little tighter?? I will measure the studs and holes in the axles to get the exact measurements before any alterations, but would like any experience on the tightness if possible. Thanks!!

Check Moroso and Mr Gasket for the proper size for both front and rear Mopar 3 inch long press in studs scope twocents I think they both use to offer them in the proper sizes, measure the I.D. of your holes before ordering them though thumbs I have had axles redrilled and tapped for 1/2 inch screw in studs for the 4.5 inch pattern also on the A body small bolt pattern axles in the past work shruggy

i personally like to see .010-.015 press fit for knurled studs. make sure you support the axle/hub correctly when pressing them in to be sure you don't bend the assembly. and although in the past i have used the "5lb.sledge" install method, a press is a lots better way instead of possibly having a "miss", which can cause damage or pain.

Remember, when you drill with a bit that is .671", the resulting hole will normally be slightly oversize, maybe +0.003 depending on machine and technique.

iagree absolutely correct. possibly more depending on the runnout or play in the quill of your drill press. and if drilled by hand, any amount of problems can arise, from way oversize hole diameter, egg shaped holes, crooked holes, tapered holes, etc.

Thanks for the input, if it wasnt so cold here I could go out and knock one of the old studs out and get a measurement.Greg

Mr. Gasket makes a set with .665 knurls on them. I just went through this putting a set ij my stock Duster axles. .680's just would not go in.
