I normally don't post or look on here much as I'm a long time Mopar only drag racer,not a restorer or show car guy. I have 1965 dart 270 that is being made into a drag car with a full cage. I need to know what chemicals, brand and name type please, that would be best to remove surface rust and what chemical or paint type to use after getting rid of the rust to prevent it coming back or causing problems with the paint in the future help Thanks in advance bow Cab

Followed by a good etching(epoxy)primer has done the trick for me...

Rust Cure, a phosphoric acid. See this video of it used on steel that's not severely rusted or pitted. The video is 8 minutes, but you can skip much of it to see the results.

Seven months ago I applied Rust Cure to just the right lower corner of a chimney hat on top of my roof. No scrubbing - just brushed on one coat.

Second photo is a close up taken at the same time.

Today, 7 months later, I was back up on the roof and took 2 more photos in slightly different lighting.

Over the last few days I have chemically stripped paint off several small parts such as the hood striker, yoke cross member bracket, hood lock support, trunk hinges, and trunk torsion rods. After paint stripping, I sand with 220, apply Rust Cure, let it dry an hour, then reapply a few times until the steel is darkened. Just before painting I will reapply Rust Cure and wipe off. I'm expecting painting to be several months away and no rusting whatsoever on the stripped and sanded parts. Painting will be done directly on the wiped off Rust Cure.

An etching primer is a primer that contains phosphoric acid. Rust Cure is phosphoric acid. So is Rust Mort. As far as I know Rust Cure is the most acidic of any phosphoric acids I've used.

Thanks to both of you upI have a small bottle of the Rust Mort that I used last year on some small parts. I'll get a bigger bottle and use that on my K member and other parts along with a good paint primer up
Thanks again. Cab

I have used several dif rust 'converters" and so on, key ingredient to look for is phosphoric acid. I highly recommend good old naval jelly and patience, get the area free of paint cover rusted area with jelly and let it sit over night if you can stand it, then go after it with small wire brush with jelly still present, wipe it off and re apply. Do this a few times until you have a rust free panel you will see spaces in clean metal that are crystal shaped this is where the rust used to be. spay one coat of self etching primer and go on from there. But this is just my opinion and well I take to long to do anything.{note don't use etch primer if using converter type product you may end up with delamination issues}
