The body shop is actually working on my GTX this year and I need some help as to which holes I need to weld up on the firewall.

Over the years, a few holes have been added, of course. Some are pretty obvious, but some I'm not to sure of. There are three holes to the right side of the master cylinder covered by the black plastic plugs in the pic, which I hope work. Are these supposed to be there? There looks to be some extra holes on the passenger side as well. Does anyone have any pics of an unmolested firewall for reference? Any help would be appreciated.

This is what I'm working on:

1970 GTX, V Code, Column shift auto. 5/70 Production date. Power steering. Air Grabber was added by the previous owner. I'm adding power disc brakes.

The two plastic plugged holes look like where the brace for clutch pedals go

The 3 you mentioned need to go away. Passenger side there are 4 holes that need filled, the smallest diameter ones around and below the heater hose holes. The one just below the brake line is for firewall insulation retainer.

How does it look near the washer bottle? Folks like to drill there.

Did someone convert the car to a four speed at one time? I actually see three black plastic plugs between teh master cylinder and inner fender. Two holes are for the studs of the clutch pedal bracket and the middle one most likely from the spot weld that held bracket to firewall. Though, most I have seen had two spot welds. I also see the z-bar linkage that sits on top of the frame rail. So at some point, there was most likely a four speed in the car.

Yes the car was converted to a four speed at one time so that explains the holes to the right side of the master cylinder in the pic. I've already removed the clutch bracket from the frame.

An original auto car would have no holes drilled next to the master cylinder so all three holes need welded up, correct? I'm hoping to get this right the first time. My body guy, and my wallet, might not see the humor in having to redo the firewall after paint.

I'm going to weld up and re-drill the hogged/extra out holes for the ballast resistor, regulator and relay. The inner fenders are getting replaced so I don't need to worry about the extra holes drilled in those.

I've had this car apart going on ten years now, so I'm sure to have more questions down the road. I can barely remember what was on the car when I bought it so I've been going back through the pictures I took during the disassembly. It sure would be nice if you could by an assembly manual with all the engineering drawings like you can get for any GM or Ford. It sure makes it easier when it comes to restoring a vehicle.

I'm going back to a stock appearing exterior and interior. We are cutting out the scabbed in 80's vintage frame connectors. Still debating on whether to add the aftermarket torque boxes and frame connectors or just leave it stock since it is an original V-code model. I'm going to keep the headers and aluminum heads on the motor since those can be changed easily down the road if one wanted it all stock looking. Not so much with frame connectors and torque boxes. My body guy thinks it'll be okay without them since I don't plan on drag racing this thing. Going to have to make a decision soon on these.

Thanks for the help!

To be 100% correct on filling the holes from the clutch bracket, I beleive the two holes that lined up with the studs were acutally dimples. The spot weld hole should be flat. I wish I had a picture to show you. My 69 Road Runner firewall had the two dimples. I just drilled them out to add my clutch when I converted to four speed.

Yes they are dimples
