Which 318 are you referring to? There were 3 versions, Poly 318, LA 318 and Magnum 318. A poly and the LA versions would run pretty hard with a 4 barrel carb, dual exhaust and a small cam, in a lighter weight car, had to keep the rpm under 4500 or the heads ran out of air. The 340/360 heads and a slightly bigger cam would get you past 5500, but cost you a little throttle response.
The old Mopar Performance Books listed mods needed to take a LA 318 down to 10 sec quarters, weather or not that was actually possible, I don't know, and there probably wasn't much 318 left.
Seat of the pants dyno and local street racing made my LA 318 with 318 heads, a big cam, and a 4 speed a local street car to beat, on Main St, in our little burg, for a couple of summers. It sure made a lot of GM & Ford guys mad, getting beat by a 318 was like rubbing salt into the wounds. Gene

Never really quick or fast but my 318 coronet would cruise at 80 all day long in my coronet.
I have a set of small chambered 318 heads on a crate short block 360 and it has ton of useable torque for the Plymouth Pick Up.

Best thing I've ever done to wake up a 318 was to install a Edelbrock D4B intake and headers, this is the 4 bbl intake w the 318 sized ports that matches the heads....great throttle response and performance will easily spin the tires on my Challenger vert.
Take care, Rick 68 Coronet R/T 440 & 68 Charger 528 Hemi,and 5 Challengers! 6 cyl, 318, 360, 383, 451

Had a 69 318 in my Dart with stock 318 heads, dual plane edelbrock LD4B intake with headers, 455 lift DC cam with 3.55's and a stick in a Dart that was 3400 lbs and it would run 14.1 on street tires at E-town. Easy 13 second car all day long with slicks or drag radials. I knew a guy with a pretty rowdy 318 that ran high 11's but the car was stripped and very light. Mine was a full street car. Use the small port heads to keep the port velocity up, they work plenty good to 5000 rpm or so. Or better yet upgrade to a magnum 5.2 for cheap and take advantage of the better ports and roller cams. Edit- Just pulled up the timeslips- Was running 95-96 mph with a best short time of 2.30. Easy 13's with some slicks.

70 Dart, dead stock 318 short block, 484" Purple shaft, 360 stock heads, intake, TQ, headers 2 1/2" exhaust, 4.10, street tires. Would run 14.0@101 all day. Too much cam with no compression. Helped it hook with street tires (non sticky). Doug
