As far as I know, there is no need for anything fancy... just bolt a piece of strong wire (a piece of coat hanger is what I use) to the engine, and bend it to point to wherever you want it to. Just make sure that it is perpendicular to the degree wheel. I don't normally agree with many magazine writers but that is the way I do mine, I use a smaller degree wheel and use the top 3/8 timing cover bolts, I have one bent up for both the passenger side and drivers side It doesn't hurt to have a spare and a plan B

I wonder what AndyF uses. Probably the same, but it wouldn't surprise me a bit to see some beautiful machined billet aluminum pointer.
Wire coat hangers might have been the bane of Joan Crawford's existance, but they have degreed in about a million cams.
R. Well since you asked I use a small pointer which I cut out on the laser. It is the correct length to mount on a long stud which comes off the water pump mount.

As said, a stout one/dont bump it/then triple check true TDC then go from there
