Hi all
I started a post long ago I called MAJOR Score!!!
I cannot locate it in the search function so I thought I would just start over in here. I put all the pics on photobucket anyway since I cannot figure out how to post more than one pic per post.
Here is the plan
1970GTX to start with. I bought an insurance totalled 2007 Charger R/T that still ran and drove (rear end damage)
My plan is to take as much as I can out of the Charger and install it in the GTX. Motor, auto transmission, computers, disc brakes all around, bucket seats, it even had a satellite radio but I will use a different unit.
I bought an AlterKtion front end and a 4 link rear. I also am installing the XV frame stiffening package and one of their EFI fuel tanks.
Exterior will be primarily stock except for minor changes i.e. 16" Torque Thrust D (need 16 to fit brakesand calipers from the Charger) and the rear view mirrors will be painted ralley/race style ones from that era.
I got WWWAAAAAYYYYY delayed by the rust exposed when we media blasted the GTX. It is easier to say what REMAINS of the GTX
firewall (upper cowl replaced)
rear frame rails
floor from forward trunk seam to rear footwell seam
Roof
A pillars
inner rocker panels
inner front fenders
EVERY OTHER BODY PIECE has been replaced by AMD stuff or donor car parts!
Inside will have a custom built dash and center console and katzskin leather in blue and white
B-5 is the color with a white vinyl roof.

You can see the carnage, Charger, and progress on my photobucket site.

http://s284.photobucket.com/albums/ll40/DariusCRCKBR/

I will post updates as progress warrants. Right now it's all about plug welding and grinding at least 1500 spot weld holes!

Another pic. The trunk gutter was a piece of cake this way. Too bad there are some holes to plug from removing the old gutter.

Trying multiple pics in one post here.
I use AMD patch pieces for the bottoms of both sail panels.....you know the place that ALWAYS is rotted on these cars?
GREAT fit! Keep in mind I have NEVER cut a hole in a car and welde a patch back in, this was a piece of cake and the pieces fit like a glove!
I HAD some pics posted here but they got deleted???

I hung my doors and fenders for test fit...not too bad considering this car was down to a floor and roof supported by false work. The fit is workable for sure!
Lots more progress pics here

Looking good Darius.
I used a Lenco spot welder back when I worked for a dealership body shop. They save a lot of time. I've been trying to find a nice used one to use here at my new shop.
Can't wait to see this one finished.

Very nice work Darius!! One thing to keep in mind is, with your frame connectors, you'll have to put a through hole in them for the parking brake cable to go through if you're installing one. Don't ask how I figured that out.

I actually have two "thru sleeves" in the cross member just inside the inner rocker on both sides and I have a "pull " wire running thru the right frame connector so I can pull my battery cable from the trunk up without having it exposed. The plan is to mount fuel and brake cables to the sides of the frame connectors since they present such a nice tall flat surface.
I'll post pics when we get around to that. There have been many discussions about that sort of thing. I even have pull wire inside both rear frame rails since I had the trunk floor out. There will be minimal wire exposed in this car when it is done.
My 30 years of remodeling work has paid off here as I am always thinking about how to conceal wire and pipe!

Got my AlterKtion test fitted today...sweet!!!
I only had to drill 4 holes and everything else bolted right up as advertised.
GREAT job Bill in the mfg of these units!!!
I have NEVER attempted anything like this and I got it done in about 5 hours. having my car on a rotsserie made it a lot easier.

Hi Guys
Been busy lately with work finally picking back up but I have managed to get my 4 link installed and make the car a roller again. I posted the Alterkation pics so here is a 4 link one.
Easy install and I welded it all in, I would not feel comfortable just bolying it in...although it is a pretty easy thing to do.

This is not a very exciting pic in and of itself but I sure was excited to get this car back on it's own feet.

I got the motor/trans assembly mounted on the alterktion and installed in the car today. Here are some pics of how it looks and a few of the clearance mods worked on today.
This first one is the tunnel/hump cutout. We may have to butterfly the length of the tunnel also as the w5a580 sits rather high but will know better once we get the trans mount fabbed up

Here is a frame rail mod I had to make to clear the stock exhaust manifold flange. TTI does NOT make a header for the 5.7 using the w5a580 as the pipes won't clear the starter....according to the design engineer at TTI!

Here is the piece we cut out to clear the trans hump fit back into the car. All we will have to do is cut some extentions to raise the hump appx 1"

Here are some more pics of the transmission mounting. We turned a piece of aluminum to replace the rubber dampner on the w5a580. This allows us to bolt on a "U" joint which further allows us to use a slip yoke. Custom drive shaft is in progress.

We cut holes in the cross member and "sleeved" them with 3" dia pipe for the exhaust to run through instead of having to wrap them under the frame. This will show up better in furure pics

Here are 2007 Charger R/T front disc brakes on a 70 B Body with an Alterktion.Bear hubs on the MustangII spindles. Had to turn a small spacer to fit on the hubs for the difference in the rotor dia and hub dia

The bracket from the Charger was cut down and turned on the lathe to fit around the flange on the 8 3/4 axle housing.

The backing plate was filled in with a piece of same thickness steel and re-drilled to the correct dia to fit this application.

Well guys & Gals, I have been slowed on car progress by the economy....suprise, suprise.
i have had to lay off all of my employees but one which means my partner and I are back in the field building kitchens and baths.
There is some progress happening and I may be able to get some pics this week,of the stainless exhaust system. it is looking good with quick disconnects for easy maint. The way the pipes go THROUGH the cross frame rail is VERY cool!
Furstrating that now when The only real big expense left is paint and upholstry I don't have the time to go work on it!

I got the entire dash assembly installed in my GTX.
It was almost as if the engineers for the new LX Charger was thinking "somebody might want to put this in an old B Body" when they designed it, the fitr was that close.
I even got the HVAC box to fit in very nicely, grtting the duct work installed will be a challenge but it is doable.
I realize many of you may not care for this "mod" but it is what I want and I am happy with it so far.

Wow, I'm impressed!
I'm guessing you will have almost ALL the creature comforts of the donor car, not JUST the engine.
I'm a little bit of an "old school" guy usually, but I sure want to see how your car turns out.

Here is a pic of the brake pedal/linkage and you can also see how I fit the steering column using the original column mount bracket

I got the steering linkage done finally. I figure all told I have appx 30 hours in messing with this part of the swap. A lot of in-and-outs and mock ups to make sure it would be just right before fabbing up the mounts for the Heim joints. This will take a few separate posts.
This first one is the end of the Alterktion frame. I added appx 2" and mounted the lower Heim joint there plus capped off the end so crap won't collect in there.

... and the thing that really impresses me about this build, is that you used the brakes from the LX car on your GTX. From all that I have learned while gathering parts and ideas to put the 5.7 in my Duster...is that the NAG1 5 spd automatic won't work no way/no how without the brake system being incorporated also. I chose the easy way out and bought a low mile 545RFE out of a 2wd Hemi Durango. For me, the floor pan is easier than fabbing the brakes.

I have read a lot of threads on this kind of swap and have never seen a reference to the brake/trans issue you mention.
I hope that is NOT the case as I was able to get the brakes themselves swapped over but I am not doing the anti lock part of the brake system.
Where did you see that discussion?

Just from talking to Mopar transmission guys. The NAG1 doesn't have input or output sensors, so it gets it's MPH readings from the brakes. They supposedly take the readings from the antilock brake sensors, average the 4 readings and that is what tells the computer...to tell the tranny when to shift. If you have the antilock parts, check on this before you rule out using them. You've done a lot of nice work installing the LX dash, so if I was doing the same...I would use every inch of wiring from the Charger if you have it. The antilock brakes can be a PITA, but they can be a good thing too.

I do still have all the brake parts from the parts car as well as the entire wire harness and computers. The intent is to use everything stock. The only things we decided not to swap over were the entire rear end....too much modification to make it work well, and the anti-lock component.
My transmission is a w5a580. Not sure how much, if any, difference there is. I know the Nag1 is from trucks mostly but they are similar. Not being a transmission guy I really cannot say.

The W5A580 is the NAG1, and the 545RFE is the truck transmission. I'll try to get some pics of my 545 and post it.

It's definately shorter, but the 545 main body is wide all the way back to the tailshaft housing. I think your W5A580 main case tapers off some.
