I swapping out a motor from a friends 1996 1500. It's is a magnum 5.9. It threw a rod and I am thinking about building it. I have a stock 79 crank, scat I beams, and speed pro Pistons I was going to put into the 79 block.
The 5.9 would definitely need machine work. It has 325,000 miles, but didn't smoke or anything. It threw a rod because it was ran out of oil.
Is this swap possible? I was hoping to have the block machined 30 over to fit the speed pros Pistons, and put a magnum 5.2 cam in it, carb intake, old style distributor, and drop it into my 72. Only issues I see MAY be the fuel pump. I'm not entirely opposed to an electric pump. I kinda want to keep the serpentine system, and use the existing accessories.
Just a thought.

You can purchase the Hughes cam extension so you can use an LA timing cover to retain the mech pump (its dirt cheap)

The serpantine/electric fuel pump upgrade is great! I have pretty much convinced all my customers lately to do it and they all love it. Just get the little mr gasket pump from auto-zone.
The 318 cam up grade is small and not worth looking for one unless you just happen to have it sitting around. I have a couple and usually do it in towing or very heavy rigs.
The heads are probably cracked and the valves will be receded bad in those heads with that many miles. You can still get a VJ with the cracks but the receded seats are bad for flow and you can not press in hard seats with cracks in em so you may be looking for heads.
The crank/rods/pistons... all drop right in but you need to make sure you use the correct balancer/flywheel/flex plate to maintain the correct balance. If you do not get the rotating assy. balanced you will have damaging vibrations.
If the pistons are old 360 style you might mock it up, see how far below deck they are and have the deck milled to get em zero decked then run a fel-pro 1008 for tight quench and more compression. You will get more TQ HP and MPG as well as lower emmissions.
I see you are in california, what year rig are you planning on doing this in? The block may be a giveaway to a sharp emmisions inspector.
