That seems like a "non stressed" area unless they were binding........I did tear apart a BB and someone put the lifters in like a small-block w/the tie bars against the block.

IMO that is a very peculiar place to have a lifter crack. Makes me think something in the valvetrain was not very happy or it was a defect to begin with. Given you found others I would guess valvetrain issue.

There is absolutely no reason for that lifter to break there. Appears you have a clearance or geometry issue too. Some serious wear marks on that broken one. I know you said you broke it in vice, but the fact that it was "pushed back" means something touched it. About all that could be is the pushrods

Monte and Al have a point, every lifter failure we have seen was caused by some other issue. whistling

IDK....but my thoughts are vibratory frequency....(harmonics).....the grain structure could be evaluated to determine things like high cycle fatigue and such...the other thing I find interesting is the color of the roller....looks like heat or lubrication issues also....?

For you guys running the Comp 892 lifter, did you run them in a stock, unbushed block? I grabbed a set for extremely cheap, but wasn't sure if there's any issue with the EDM oiling hole intersecting with the main oil gallery.

Thanks... I'm no longer concerned with the cutaway being a problem at my intended lobe lift. What has me wondering is that 440Jim appears to have installed a restrictor in the EDM hole. This would apply to the 892s only, not the lifter I asked about in that thread. My current build is different from anything I've ever done before top end wise (-1 heads and Jesel rockers) so I'm trying to figure out what oiling issues I need to address.

I'm using those lifters now in a unbushed 400 block I'm building for myself, 300+ lbs. on the seats and 800 lbs + opened. I haven't finish setting the pressures yet due to needing a cutter to cut the spring pockets so I don't know the exact pressures yet. I was told by the racer Rep I work with at Comp to use JB weld to plug one side of the oil hole going into the lifters so I did plug the outer one. I measured the depths of the oil inlet holes on both sides of those lifters and the hole on the oil galley side will be in the oil galley when the lifters are on the bottom of the lobes so it should oil the rocker arms real well up
Monte, which Comp Cams part numbers are you talking about for the best lifters from Comp for the .903,.904 lifter sizes?

We use the inexpensive Comp Stuff in the dragster. Never had an issue with them in any similar builds, unbushed blocks 800 or less pressure on the nose. But this aint exactly Hi HP stuff either with mild spring pressures. We run a Pac 1279? spring I believe. Right tool for the right job....
