I picked up a quart at Harbor Freight and it performed as well as everyone has stated. I cleaned up some marker light sockets and they look great.

Can I just use them or should they be coated with something to inhibit the rust. In this case most of the corrosion was in the sockets so Dielectric grease should hamper more corrosion. What about an ashtray? I would imagine with the factory coatings being compromised the rust will return. Short of replating everything what do you guys do?

Thanks

It will rust again so you should put something on it. Short of replating I use satin or flat clear coat on a lot of things depending on what they are. Some people use RPM but I didn`t have the success with it that others had.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I deleted my response to RPM because this thread would have gone way off of the rails. But I had poor results with RPM as well.

after evapo you need to rinse the item in laquer thinner
or it will flash rust very quickly.
then you can coat the item with the product of your choice.

Looks like you've been around here for a while...It's a shame you can't tell the truth about using the product without the drama and banned member salesmanship that comes with every thread...Just for the record I've properly preped and done my own tests with it and have'nt gotten the expected results either...Let alone the members I've talked to with the same oppinion but don't want to feed the troll...

Eastwood makes a phosphate wash that would treat the metal for short term and works very well on the immediate flash rust but it does'nt hold up in the long run...Some have used a light oil{like a gun oil} on the parts but that requires reapplication and monotoring of the parts..

Clear will appear to do the job but eventually the rust will reappear and create a "spiderweb" type pattern looking very unnatural...

Pick your route and spin the wheel of luck...Until you've bought all the products no matter which route you take it would look much better and cost effective to just bite the bullet and have it replated if that's the original finish..

My opinion now is "Paint it black or put it in a bubble". ie. Paint your parts black or use RPM and keep your car in a climate bubble.

Take a look at My Son's Duster in the Restoration section. The front end pieces are epoxy primed and painted black. Same with the rear axle except we'll hit the pig with a Blast cast type paint from the parts store. The same with the trans.

Yes, Clear will eventually rust but it is better then nothing. Spiderwebbing never happened for me but I guess I never put it on heavy enough for it to happen. I used RPM on some bare metal parts and it was like they never had anything on them at all. It may work marginally for a show poodle.
