Is it the same as a 727 ?

Trans is behind an SRT10 Viper engine out of a 2006 quad cab truck and believe they were a 48re.. work

Spline count is the same but the outer diameter is bigger.

Not sure if it's larger as Dave said but somewhere along the line they changed the angle the splines are cut on. Same count and size but they won't go on.

Hmmm...ok, thanks guys.. I might shoot Cass a message on it too. I'll be needing one for my project anyways it looks like. Probably just going to look for a 1350 series u-joint version one I was thinking.

There is no angle on them, with the tail housing off the yolks slide on and off both out put shafts.

To be sure you can slide a 727 ylok in there, I bet there is a big gap between the bearing and yolk surface.

If you want I can look in my stash and see if I have one.

Thanks, I will end up needing to buy one pretty much anyways as I was going to run the 1350 ujoint setup to make it easier when getting a new driveshaft made up, want the strength, etc. I figure the original sized joints an original yoke would have used might be ok, but ujoint selection is easier with a more common sized 1350 joint and since this is not going back into a Dodge truck, why not. laugh

Just thought if the 727 and RE were the same it would have made buying one quicker but it is no big deal really and can just check for an actual 48RE one if nothing else. up

The 47RE and down uses the 727 yolk, only the 48RE uses the bigger outer diameter yolk.

If you want to use the 727 yolk you can just swap the OD housing, all the guts are easy to swap no special tools needed (unless you want to dissasemble the OD direct clutch pack), make sure you swap out the big ball bearings in the case also. I can sell a 2wd OD housing with the 727 output bearing size for the price of scrap and shipping.

Thanks for the offer! I will check with Cass first and if I can just get a yoke for this one as is, I will just go ahead and go that route. Since I am buying a yoke either way, if it will save some work, why not go for the direct fit one in the first place. grin

I think around '90 the spline changed from an involute to a convolute spline, they have the same spline count but do not interchange. If you look inside the yokes side by side you can see the difference. You are correct that the 48 has a larger outer diameter.

I'll just get one for a 48 in particular then. up

No huge fuss, I still have to get the engine mounted in the truck, decide on a diff, etc before I am ready to have the driveshaft made and really need the yoke badly and all.

Sorry but I dug through my pile and have no 48RE yolks. I do have over 100 output shafts from 727, 48RE, 44RE, RH... and they all have the same splines, I just don't see any difference and the 727 yolk and 47RE yolk slide on all of em... must be getting blind in my old age.

A while back I went to the local Pick-N-Pull to get a driveshaft for a project I'm involved in. 727 shafts are rare in the yards nowadays and I needed one with Spicer 1330 u-joints to mate up to the 727 and Ford 9-inch combo. Previous threads here stated that all the 46RH/RE slip yokes would fit a 727.

I chose a shaft from a 2000 Durango with a 46RE, I pulled it myself and it slid right out of the trans with little effort. When I got it home and tried to plug it into the 727 it wouldn't go so I tried several of the bare 727 output shafts in my stash...still wouldn't go. The end of the 727 output shaft is ever so slightly tapered and this allowed the RE yoke to just barely start but not slide in.

The pics below show the yokes and their splines. It appears that the spline angle on the two yokes is different. (the yoke with the paper tag is the 46RE)

Yep, I went through this trying to fit a large joint 904 style yoke. Chrysler changed the pressure angle of the splines across the board awhile back.
