I have a 08 Sebring convert with a 4 cylinder/auto with 110,000miles on it that is my winter beater. In the last 3 days it has shifted into neutral as I was driving. Both times it was under normal acceleration. Traveling about 60mph and it just goes into neutral(not the shifter, just the trans)I let up on the gas and it goes back into gear and is ok till the next time. Any ideas? I don't want to get into expensive tranny rebuilds but if it a minor problem I'll deal with it.

This would be so much easier if I knew what I was doing...

I agree. Sounds like its low on fluid. If it was something else and set a code many times that will put the tans in Limp mode and it would lock in second or third gear and would not shift until you shut it off and restart it and if it was not a hard code then it would shift again. Course low on fluid can cause the code of "Loss of Prime" and may eventually set a code. Ron

Update on tranny issue. It seems that it is an electrical problem. Codes indicate one of 3 problems. Ignition switch, computer or wiring. More later

After another computer scan, we are thinking it is nothing more than an old weak battery. A malfunctioning aftermarket remote starter may also play a role but that is uncertain as it only showed up as an alarm arming code and the car does not have an alarm system. The remote starter activates the electrical system but won't start the car. Will see what happens with a new battery.
