My steering box seems to be 4 1/2 turns lock to lock. (20:1 ratio?). Anyways, when I turn it to center (2 1/4 turns), the master spline on the steering box is not at the 12 o'clock position. It actually seems to be at the 9 o'clock position. Did I put this box back together incorrectly or is it normal?

Thanks.

Stan

Which master spline? The one on the input shaft or the one on the output?

Stanton,
The master spline on the input (the one that the steering column/shaft connects to).

Yes...

The 'coupler' side should be equally divided, lock to lock...

You have the play taken out & are exactly halfway. I like a hint of play in the col for the final adjustment but for this I'd get it just to no play to definitely confirm you are halfway.

Got it. I will take it apart this weekend and have a look. I rebuilt this box about 4 years ago and it has been siting on my shelf since then. Time to find out what I did wrong.

RapidRobert,
I haven't got the column in yet. Things just didn't seem right.

Thanks!
Stan

RS23U1G,

I definitely have a FSM. Very worn and tattered. I will pull everything back apart and have a look.

All you have to do to correct it is pull the top cover (3 bolts). Pull out the cross shaft, center the unput shaft, and drop the cross shaft back in centered. You shouldn't even need to do any adjusting, just torque the 3 bolts back down. 10 minutes !!
