Looking for experienced recommendation o nhyd roller lifters. The prices are all over the place form $400-$650+ building 408 street strip. Cam proposed as example intake 238@.050 lift .550 lift 110 CL .Looking for best quality / economy. Has to work on street. Thanks

Use that cam, put solid rollers on it. Lash at .002 with aluminum heads and .004 with cast iron. Then forget it. I would never use a hydraulic roller lifter again. Then you can block off the oil to the lifters too. BTW, you can use more spring pressure with the solid roller. No need to go berserk, but where I ran 150-160 on the seat I now run 200-210. The springs live forever. Much better IMO.

I agree, my solid roller setup rarely ever needs adjusted and I put a good amount of street miles on it.

I have a set of Scorpion hyd. roller lifters for my dad's 540" street hemi project. Dan at Performance Only (RIP) recommended them and said he used a lot of them in street/strip builds successfully.
I have not built the engine, so I don't have any results yet.

MadS Can you explain why you don`t like hyd rollers .{ My father was asking the original question on my behalf }I have a set of howard solid rollers and solid howard cam presently ..Bought as a newly built 408 with only break in time. The cam was too large for my needs and had a 106 LS. Upon taking the engine apart we decided to bush lifter bores and go to a smaller 110 LS cam . Machinist is trying to convince me to go to hydraulic roller cam and lifters due to perceived issues with oiling the soild lifters and adjusting . The Howard rollers are the sportsman budget racer, they sell another they call street type ? Advise please

Because they are too limited. You can use a solid roller lifter on a hydraulic lifer cam profile and get much more performance. Just lash them where I posted earlier and drive it.

I was big on the HRT a long time ago. You can't use much spring pressure. Most guys don't run near enough oil pressure for HRT's.

I don't get why oiling the lifters is an issue. Solid rollers splash lube. You can plug the oil off to the lifters and stop the leaks.

How about needle bearing life? Is the hyd roller cam clearance ramps that much softer. Or is it the fact the lash is so tight?

I've seen some guys make good power with Johnson limited travel hydraulic roller lifters.

I'd have to call my cam guy about the ramp deal. Been doing it so long I no longer remember the descussion we had when he convinced me to do it (I was bitching because we were RPM limited with HRT's). I do know that the tight lash helps. I'm old enough to remember when EVERYBODY who was ANYBODY used "rev kits" on their chevies. Back in the very early 80's (probably 1980) I saw my first roller on the street. Guy was slinging (I'll let you figure that out) so he had big cash (and he was alledgedly doing other stuff too). I had seen him break a couple of engines on the street and we ended up at the same shop. He was breaking roller lifters. The rev kit stopped it. I figured it was added spring pressure but it was the fact the roller never left contact with the cam. The roller didn't skid up to speed and all that.

So the tight lash helps.
