Who is the go to source for having the correct phosphate coating applied to brake backing plates for OE restoration?

Specifically for an A12.

Thanks
Chris

Who told you that was the correct finish?

I was thinking it was the correct finish on mine. i know some were clear cad, but thought most were a phosphate coating.

cdp - Are you talking about the front or rear backing plates? And if you are asking about the front, does your car have drum or disk?

Nice, exactly what I was looking for.

I had my originals powder coated semi-gloss black when I did the front end. I just ran across another set cheap and figured I'd have the front and rears coated correctly.

Where did you get them done?

Bare metal with a light oil coating is what is commonly known to be correct for drum brake backing plates in 1969 at least. Same goes for upper control arms. As usual in this hobby, i am sure there are some exceptions to that rule.

Zinc Phos on all my survivors.....not a great plating in a very vulnerable area....so it does erode....sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. It can appear to be bare metal looking on some cars. Also have one car where the zinc phos is darker on one side than the other.....depending on how clean and fresh the plating tanks were at the time. I guess it can be possible that some parts got missed getting plated.....

I had that on my 70 Cuda Dana 60 backing plates. One was dark phosphate, and the other was very light, almost bare looking. The rear differential/brakes were untouched.

On my 69 Barracuda the backing plates are phosphated. I found a local zinc plater that also did phosphating.

Here are 2 sources for phosphating.

Don't forget that your accelerator pedal assembly is also a big phosphated part that might need to be done the same time as your backing plates.

You can do small parts phosphating at home in your spare time using gunsmithing chemicals in your wife's stainless pots. Backing plates may require bigger stainless pots than your wife has. Or you can go to plastic trays with water heater elements. The plastic needs to be good for use at 200 degrees F. About 20 seconds in a solution at 175-190 degrees is basically what's required for DIY phosphating other than proper cleaning and good temperature control.
