Does anyone have drawing of the system they used in the door windows? I know they used seat belts, but was trying to find how it's done.

Anyone reproduce kits? Thinking of doing it to loose weight on my car.

Did it on a Duster I had in another life. Seat belt strap bolted to the track mechanism attached to the bottom of the glass. Fold the outer end over and sew. Install a heavy duty snap and install the male half of the snap in the metal below the door panel. The door still had the OE arm rest. I ran it just behind that. Pretty simple. I wasn't trying to make it a perfect copy of the '68 cars.


If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

No, Lexan was cut from 4'x8'sheet. The bottom has .060" aluminum angle bolted on to stiffen it up (1/8"). The door release is mounted on aluminum channel as well with a piece of 3/8" steel fuel line welded from the door release to the vent frame to keep the handle from flexing. A Home Depot closet door roller is modified to ride on the front of the vent channel to keep the window from tilting. Vent is Lexan also (1/4").
All cheap stuff. My 63 Dodge H/T was done the same way.

All the ones I saw back in the day had both seat belt pieces. Pull the release and the window goes down, release with belt hooked to window. The tongue (male part) bolted to bottom of door.

Yes, The 63 H/T was 3/16" since there were no frames. It seemed to seal well but at high speed the top of the windows would suck outward with air pressure. The 64 sedan has no issue.

If you are going to actually drive the car much, it is difficult to get the strap just right so that the window is up tight and you can still snap it. Also, even the tough seat belts can stretch just a bit over time allowing the window to drop a little bit.

I dealt with this by using clean used seat belts from the junk yard and attaching the window end of the belt to a loop of stiff elastic band. That way I had some give on the strap so that I could snap it easier when the window was up, and the window was always pulled up tight to the weatherstrip.

That's the reason they used the lap buckle part, click it then pull up to tighten the belt

When you pull the strap down, then snap the button to the tab on the door.

While I am no expert, I don't believe that the original 68 SS cars had buckles on the window lift belts. Here is a link to Mancini's old car that is at Mecum now. There are a couple of pics of the interior there. No buckles on the window lift belts on that Dart.

Besides, I tried the buckle. First, it really doesn't do a good job of pulling the window up after the belt goes around all those corners. Second, it is hard on the paint where the belt rubs. And lastly,that buckle flopping around the top of the door when the window is down, isn't cool.

The elastic and a snap is just a better way to go, in my opinion.

Race cars didn't run with the window down. I think 1970, West Virginia Hemi, the first time I noticed what held the window up. Of course he could have done that himself. Saw plenty of the Darts and Cudas in 68-69 but to busy looking at the engine LOL and wishing I had one of them. Still can't afford one!
