For those of you who always help me out of my problems, thank ya'll because you do see my questions along with my problems giving me problems. Well now my transmission is back in the car and my output shaft is a 30 spline as well as my slip yoke, well actually "29" its missing one spline leaving a larger gap.The issue is that the slip yoke will slide on effortlessly about two inches then it snugs up and stops sliding on. I can slide it off and then put effort and slide it on harder, but now I have to take a rubber mallet and tap it either off or on. At this time I cannot get it off without tapping with the rubber mallet again. Is this normal or just another one of problems that this car is giving me. I don't know what damage if any can occur by the "slip yoke" not slipping properly. Any suggestions?

Well, first I'd check the condition of the splines throughout the yoke and the trans shaft...Make sure there's no debris, rust, spline twisting, etc... the whole length of the splines..{you did index that "larger gap" other wise known as the master spline to the trans did'nt you ??}...Technically the two should slide without binding throughout the rear suspensions range of motion...

they go on aways then you have to orient it slightly till the splines start to engage then go on further. it takes the weight of the shaft & a good shove to start it/remove it on the splines but no mallet should be needed. got another 727 you can check it on?

The new tailshaft bushing may be a little bit to tight work scopeTry sliding it in all the way and see how hard it is to use the yoke to turn the tranny both ways, if it is easy one way and not the other way then the yoke and bushing are probally okay twocents If it is hard and tight both ways the bushing may be to tight on that yoke scopeshruggy Let us know what you find out thumbs

The open space in the splined area is often called the "Master Spline" but my info tells me that it is actually there to act as a VENT.

Correct, the dead spline allows air to move from the air pocket behind the output shaft to the tailhousing...prevents "air hammering" on the output shaft.

Sometimes the yoke/shaft does'nt want to slide together...You might need to pull it back and spin it a little and try again...That's really the point I wanted to make...Not that there was a mate/index mark to the "master spline like a power steering coupler...Sorry for the wording..

I'd be looking down into the tail shaft bushing. I had a rear seal garter spring come off and get jammed in the bushing. We pounded the yoke in and ran it before we realized what happened. It didn't do the yoke a lot of good.

This is a new slip yoke and a new transmission, but I did check the slip action on the old core 727 that I have laying around and it slipped well even though the output shaft did have rust dust on it. I ended up taking a medium sized triangle file to the splines of the yoke and lightly took a lil dust off of each spline, rinsed it out with cleaners several times, blew it out, dropped some fluid in and on it, and slid under the car to try it on. At my surprise, this thing went on with what I would say is a great fit. Thanks for all of the help guys.
