Is it possible to put an auto-shifter in on the floor with no console. I currently have column shift and hate it but I am not sure I am ready to put up all the bucks required for a console. However, I am about to yank the dash out to repaint and clean out the crud and little bit of rust in back of the dash. Therefore, I would rather change steering column now and go with a floor shifter. Later on I can spend the bucks for the auto console...Does anyone know of a reasonable place to get floor console brackets and the console pieces.

By the way, this post is for a 68 charger.

Sure you can. I plan on doing it with both of my cars and my buddy has a 69 Superbee he has done this way. Interesting in that both he and I had seperately decided to use the B&M Quicksilver shifter. He swears it was easy and problem free.

That is good news. Are you going to be able to keep the buddy seat in?

I haven't done it yet, but my friend Jay was able to keep his in. The superbee will have buckets with no buddy seat. The Barracuda is going to be a bench seat car. Jay has told me it should be no problem and I have asked about it hear and been told the same thing. The nice thing about the Quicksilver unit is that once it is in drive, it stays centered in the shift, meaning you pull back to shift to 2nd or 1st but then it(the shifter) goes back up. In other words, 1st gear will not have the shifter sitting against the seat.

Do you have to fabricate any pieces to connect the shifter to transmission or is it pretty much a straightforward job?

I went to the Summit website and could not find a shifter for a 68 charger. Does anyone know what model to use?

Aftermarket shifters are universal and will fit a variety of makes and models. Just pick which design you prefer and put it in. Mounting the shifter itself to the floor may require some fabrication, but the shifter attaches to the tranny with a cable. The shifters also come with a plastic base that covers the shifter mechanism for a clean appearance. If you do decide to get a factory console later on, you can adapt the shifter to the console, but it may require modifying the console to work.

Or later on down the road you can sell the aftermarket shifter and go to a stock shifter if you are ever so inclined.

I wouldn't mind the going with the console and stock shifter later on down the road. I think I will get the B&M Quicksilver shifter for now. If I like that a whole lot I may not be so inclined to change since I imagine it would cost close to a grand for all the console parts.

Hmm. Once I get my four speed swap done in about a month, I know where somebody will be able to get a good, complete Hurst Quarter Stick and cable.
