I would like to get some input to see how far off this combo is. I want to run in the 7.50 class at my track, it's the slowest class I can get into where I don't have to wait in line for 2hrs with Rangers and civics to make a run.

The car is a 68 Dart, weight is around 3225# with me in it, it has 340 T bars and BBP discs up front,I'm planning on Cal Tracks & mono's out back with 235/60/15 M/T radials.

The motor I'm planning right now is a 360 with 308 heads, stock crank & rods KB 191 hypers with 11.2cc domes, Comp XE295 hyd 251/257@.050 .564/.564, crane 1.5 gold rockers, 308 heads cut for 2.02/1.60's bowls cleaned up and lightly ported, victor 340 manifold & 750 holley DP, 1 5/8" street headers & full 2 1/2" exhaust.

For a Trans I have a 904 & 998, I'll rebuild which one would work best for me and use a MVB and either a 9 1/2" or tight 8" converter. One thing I think will hurt it is that I want to run 3.55's, I live 60 miles from the track and had 3.91s with the same size tire in my last car and it was a bit much.

Thanks for any input - Joe

well.... let me see. that's impossible! it's gonna take a lot more gear. with a 3.55 it will still be in 2nd going thru. i know. that's the gear in my sons 72 dart that weighs 3426 with him in it.{you always have to include the driver's weight unless you can get the car to drive itself } his car will run 7.40's with a 125 shot. high 8's on motor. you might want to use a 440 if you are determined to keep the 3.55.

The Victor is a good intake but, the RPM is a better choice for
you......and you can get by with a point less compression.

If I have to run more gear I will, I'm just shooting to make enough torque in the 4-6,500 range to overcome the lack of gear.

My last car was a Duster that weighed 3300# with me in it and was running 8.60's@82 with a 318, KB 167s, XE 268 cam, stock 360 heads, M1, 600 holley, 998 with 175k converter, 3.91's & 26's, I'm trying to pick up 1.1 sec and 10mph over that combo.

I've built several combos with less compression and camshaft that would do this easily. PM me if you'd like.

My combo is
346 cid
9.5:1
230/230 480/480 hydraulic
box stock Eddies
stock rockers
Air gap
750 holley
1 5/8-1 3/4 TTI's

904
9.5" PTC 4600 flash

3.91's
235/60/15 ET street radial

My car has been 7.82 in the 1/8th

I have more head, gear and converter than you, but my car is overweight. You have more cam, more cubes and probably some other things I am too lazy to look back at. If you want to run a 7.50 index class the car needs to go 40's in the heat.

I´m finishing my setup...

318, xe284h, 11.5 CR on ethanol, fuel injected, 2.02 1.60 ported heads, roller rockers, forged pistons and rods, 3300lbs Dart, 3.73 gears, ladder bars, ceramic clutch, 11.5x26 street tires.

What could be improved in this combo? Gears?

How much should I expect on 1/8 time ?

I'd be very very impressed if you could get that combo to go 7.50's on a 355 gear.

I used to have a duster

346"
Fully ported 2.02 smog heads (flow 245~250cfm)
Solid roller 248/252@.050 .604/.613"
12.2:1 compression
1 3/4" headers
Ported Mopar M1 intake with worked 750DP
4500 9 1/2" converter
904 with low gear set
4.56 with 28 x 10.5 slicks
3300~3350lbs with driver.

The best that car ever went was 7.70's in the 1/8 and 11.85@ 116mph in the 1/4

Granted it was a 340 not a 360, but I had a lot more cam and gear to make that up with.

I agree a 4" crank would be your best bet to try and get there...

I agree.

My 416 has 9.7:1, with ported TA heads and six pack manifold, headers, cheetah VB, 3200 stall, 4.30s and stock weight and the best I could pull off was 8.01 in the 1/8th.

But I just started playing with it. it might have more but that we'll find out in the spring

Throw some W2s or Indy's on it and you might be able to do it.

I ran 7.50's (1.60 60ft) in the 1/8th with a 9:1 340 and about the same combo except my heads were untouched.

'72 Cuda
340 +0.030" with Mopar purple 484 cam
TM5 Intake with 2" spacer
850DP carb deleted choke horn
1-5/8 Headers, open
904 low gear setted trans ( A must have)
8" super tight 4700 stall convertor
4.30:1 rear gears with standard posi
28x10 slicks
SS leaf springs (Would highly recomend caltracs & monos)

Things I would change on that combo:
-Caltracs & Monos
-QF 850 Annular DP carb
-Ported Air Gap as I run now with 1" open spacer
-4.10 gear & spool
-Eddy heads & stainless 1.6 rockers

Man I don't know what I did right.
I built a .020 over 360 that runs on 93 octane pump gas in a full interior all steel Duster that my Mom races with me and it has run a 7.44 @ 91mph. It usually runs high 7.40's to low 7.50's. It's pretty simple combo.
Ported J heads, Airgap, 10.4to1, 4.30's, 904 low gear set, ATI 3000 stall, TTi headers, Lunati Voodoo flat tappet hydraulic, H/S 1.5's, 750 Holley, no belt driven accesseries. The secret is getting it to 60' and the rest is gravy. Good luck with your goals.

we did the same with a very mild 340. with a good converter a 360 should be a breeze.

Seems like all the stock stroke small blocks that run well have low gear set 904's. Interesting.

Yeah but he wants to use 3.55 gears and drive it to the track. I would think an overdrive tranny and a lockup converter and a great set of heads would be the ticket. It's a little tougher to do in a 3300# car with a smallblock.
