Well, she overheated on the way to Wally World (Cedar Point) with 8 of us stranded. Overheated, pulled over to a shop off of Baumhart Rd. Steam out of the overflow and rear of the engine. Saw clean oil and antifreeze on the ground. Cooled a little, then took off the upper rad hose to check on thermostat. It was open..HMM.. Luckily I bought a 73 Chrysler 440 radiator to replace the wimpy aftermarket that was in there. I think checking the valve seats and springs are my main concern. Plus, get everything painted, and try to figure out why this Edelbrock AVS Thunder 650 is leaking fuel after shut down. Any thoughts? Putting in Cometic head gaskets. Everything is a stock OE 73 400HP.

Rick, that carb is brand new. Has maybe 500 miles on it, including your trip to C-bus. I got it at Summit. Receipt is with the info I gave you. If you need me to try to return it, let me know.
Did it warp the heads or damage anything else?

Rare to just blow a head gasket on a stock low po mill. Did this get built or was a factory build? Seems odd and i dont think just throwing new head gaskets in there is a great idea.
I want my fair share

It likely popped the gasket due to the overheat, not the other way around.

For the fuel issue, check the float levels. They may be a touch high.

IF it overheated then it's likely the fuel in the carb boiled out due to the overheat.

on the flooding I'd opinionate, too high of psi, as you know eddys dont tolerate much & some OE mech pumps put out a surprisingly high number OR some dirt held the floats open (need a good name brand high flow 10 micron filter right at the carb inlet), Russell etc

Was working on my father in laws 69 mustang before summer. new carb. after idling 10 seconds, fuel was pouring out the boosters in the back. float was stuck down and overfilled. make sure that's not your problem. and as mentioned, too high of float levels can also cause the problem, in that it's ok while driving because fuel is being consumed and it stays relatively cool, but there is not much room to expand as it heat soaks after shut down, and can push past the boosters and drip down the venturis
good luck on the rest of it!

I will find out today going to be digging in. Will it be obvious if the head gasket was leaking

I will find out today going to be digging in. Will it be obvious if the head gasket was leaking If you have an emissions testing station in your area they could stick the probe into the air space above the coolant in the radiator neck and any hydrocarbons (from a HG leaking) will immed show up on their meter. with the eng good and hot it take em 5 minutes. & there's other ways to diagnose the HG

Cummins N14 and Cat 3406 had head gasket issues from time to time and there was IIRC a test strip that would detect HC in the coolant. Kevin

Kevin that'd be even easier. Call your diesel shops. I'm assuming it ain't so bad to where it is obviously boiling coolant out. You could pull the stat/stat housing/fanbelt & fill the coolant to the brim of the neck & start it & gun it & see if there's any bubbles or water starts to rise. As you know you only have several minutes that it will tolerate this with no circulation but if there is a HG prob something will happen pretty quickly cuz it is a dead calm (no pumping) & only combustion pressure could make it agitate

Super, the carb has been doing this since new. I'll get on those floats. Thanks a ton. typical for that carb on an iron, or alum intake, that does, or does not, have the heat crossover blocked. best is to switch to a Holley ... can't believe I said that

I use a 1/4" insulated spacer.

The last two Edelbrocks we have installed flooded right from the get go.Reset float levels, both carbs had casting flash/junk in them.Phoned the tech line ,they say max fuel pump pressure that they can handle is 5 psi which is what a stock 318 pump puts out. Put on a greasy 100k mile AVS on..no issues.I think the quality has taken a big dump on these carbs in the last 6 months or so...never had issues before.
