While it was running were you able to look at the volt gauge, if you have one? I put a Toyota Denso on my Duster and love it, shows 14 volts on my volt gauge, battery never dies, nothing runs hot.
If I remember correctly it was a 2 wire hookup, one went to the battery and one went to an 'ignition start' wire so it only had power when turning the key to the momentary start position.

I have 2 gauge wire from alt to battery. Hot switch wire and a sense wire to starter really battery post. It started out at 14 volts then down to 12.3

SO 12.3 is likely not charging at all, that's just what the battery was when the alt got smoked. Whos alternator was it? Check ALL the wiring to make sure nothing is grounded out on any of them. I smoked one alternator over the years and it was from a wire that rubbed through on a frame rail.

Are the 3 wires on your alternator harness red, green and blue?

On my car, the red is not used at all.
Green goes to the switched fuse box.
Blue goes to the large stud on the starter relay which is always hot/powered.

Had it running about 5 minutes and you can't put your hand on it for long its hot putting out 13.3 volts and goes up to. 14.4 revving engine. Ran wires straight to Alt didn't get plug

These instructions from AR-Engineering will help to see if you ran them to the right places without having the colored wires.

Will depend on alternator used, whos it is. If it is a stock type application then the above referenced link is good. Some aftermarkets are True one wire others require 2 wires

That is correct Al, mine is a Denso out of a Toyota. It is not a one-wire alternator.

Not to throw a wrench in the thread, but
Can an electric shop modify a stock Mopar 37 amp alt to put out substantially more juice and also more at idle.
In other words hop up the guts in a stock unit?

There's a shop 10 min from my house in Akron Ohio that rebuilds and modifies alternators, their number is 330-535-9514.
