I have the motor mounted in the chassis and want to start it directly from a battery. My idea is to run the hot battery cable to the hot post on the starter motor. Hook a remote starter switch from the hot starter post and to the small post on the starter. It has a aftermarket distributor which does not use a ballast resistor. Straight 12 volts all the time to the Coil. Run a hot coil wire to the hot starter post. Ground the battery to the motor. the alternator is a one wire conversion.

The starter and ground part sounds ok but why not run the ignition wire from the battery to the positive coil terminal? That way you can get to it real quickly if you need to. Straight wire with a couple of alligator clips would do it.
