Blasphemy, of course, but I can certainly see the point. The only Mopar option is to use a 727 with a Gear Vendors OD or a 518 with an adapter and the OD unit on them is weak. But if you were to go with a 5.7 Hemi you could use one of the 8 speed truck automatics which are better than any of the GM offerings.
Back to the question...cut as much as you need to cut and as long as you are at it ditch the torsion bars for a modern suspension...there that ought to stir the wrath of the righteous faithful.

I can't tell you how much has to go, but the electronic control it offers is, as you say, very attractive. Will be interesting to see eventual info received.

I had one in a 65 Belvedere that needed the support cut out in the trans tunnel, trans mount modified and the collector on the TTI headers moved. I love it behind the a 500" motor. It was a Phoenix trans and computer and adapter. I sold the car but still have the trans set up and 500" that will be going in another 65 Coronet. The best part about it is you can set the shift points and the trans would shift itself bracket racing. It was considered No E because all the new cars use the same computer.

When mopar guys start hassling me about a ford rear end I ask them to find a ford part on it. The only Ford part is the bolt pattern.
