Hello all. I'm looking to build up a 1968 440 hp for my 68 coronet.
The car will have 3.23 or 3.55 gears, 727 trans and stock converter.
I had a pair of 906 heads completely worked over. Full port work, 2.14 Manley intake valves, 1.81 Manley exhaust valves, good valve job, decked to square. They flowed in the 290 range on the intake but were done at around .525 lift.
Need to use a low intake to clear the stock hood.
I have a set of isky iron adjustable rocker arms and plan to have them bushed and blueprinted.
The engine runs fine at present and is completely stock. Supposedly, it was rebuilt 3000 or so miles ago.
I'll be removing the heads to determine how far the pistons are in the bore. Hopefully, not way down and hopefully the bores look fresh.
I was going to have a hydraulic roller ground but I'm having second thoughs.
Now, I'm considering a flat tappet solid cam. Maybe a lunati.
Any thoughts?

Absolutely on not installing a cam that's too big.
Adjusting the lash once a year doesn't bother me.
I suppose I could call cam motion and see about having one ground.

You might do a compression check before you tear it down to get some idea of how much cranking compression you have. Your compression may have a big influence on how much cam you can throw at it. Unless you are considering new pistons and the like to increase the cyl pressure.
Master, again and still

I agree 100% with this. Dwayne speced and made my solid flat tappet cam I run in the eng thats in my 63 now and he did a great job. He will not steer you wrong and he will tell you how you should break in the flat tappet cam. Mine has been together for over 4 years as I use the Valvoline VR1 racing oil and add a bottle of the zinc additive at each oil change. He has been doing cams for many years and will help you get a cam just right for your combo. Good luck , Ron

Thanks for the replies guys.
I'll call and talk to porter Monday.
What's a good intake that will clear a stock coronet hood? I was thinking edelbrock performer.

I'm building a similar 440 Six Pack engine/trans combo for my wife's 1971 R/T Challenger. I want it to be a very street friendly driver for my wife to enjoy. The engine I'm using is a 1966 440 that will have the bottom end gone through and have around 10-1 compression. Heads are the original freshend 516's with larger exhaust valves. Trans is a fresh, slightly beefed up 727 and I plan to use a very close to stock converter. Rear gear will either be 3.23 or 3.55. The engine is currently running/driving and has the MP .528 solid cam with 4 speed and 3.73 gear but I don't plan on using the cam again. The idle sounds nice and the drivability is good for me with the 4 speed. Not sure if the engine is tired or the it's the cam but it has always had low vacuum. I'm strongly considering a milder hydraulic Voodoo cam from Lunati http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2336I want a smoother idle and better low end and mid range power for cruising. I don't expect the engine to get over 5700 rpm's. Since you got better flowing heads you might consider the next step bigger Lunati Voodoo cam. I've heard good reviews for this cam. https://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2337&gid=362

For intakes you will see the oldie but goody street single planes sit lower than the great Performer RPM. Holley SD is still fantastic and avail new- the original Torker is cheap use- not available new. The Torker 2 is available new but I dont know how the height compares to its predecessor and the Holley.
Keep old mopars alive.

It wouldn't hurt to consider either the Edelbrock performer, or a stock steel intake. Search for dyno comparisons and see what pops up. I bet it might turn up some interesting numbers. I ran the stock intake on a 69 Charger RT deep into the 13s with nothing but headers and slicks and a few tricks.

The MP .528 is a good cam and the only thing I can say bad about it is that if you want a lumpy idle then its not the .528. But that really dont matter when performance is what you want. I still remember my buddy was mad at me because my old 383 with the older MP .484 cam idled with much more rump rump then his 440 did with the .528 cam. And that was his only complaint as his car ran great with the .528. But he was one of them guys who really wanted a radical sounding idle to his car. I still laugh about it to myself today. And I agree the Holley Street Dominator is a very good intake as I used one on my old 440 and it worked very good on it and its a low sitting intake that will fit under just about any hood. Ron
