In the Oct 2015 issue on page 38, they have an article on a 71 Challenger Shaker convertible. They state there were 11 made and ten were 383 cars and the other was a 340 car. I find this hard to believe as I have a 340 vert shaker car with all the original documents. I don't understand where they get their numbers. The shaker registry lists at least 18 shaker convertibles that year. It's a beautiful car but the article states the only salvageable sheet metal was the deck lid. I know this has been argued before but is this really the original car then? It states the dashpad was stolen but the thieves left the metal dash frame with the VIN tag. Umm, the VIN tag is riveted to the dashpad itself. I find it hard to believe the thieves would take the time to drill out the rivets and leave the VIN tag behind on the metal frame. Just too many things I'd question about this car. How did the fender tag survive all the rust? Just venting. Unless I could see the original paper work, I'd be careful of what is stated in the article. Just my 2 cents.

I think there is merit in a thief getting that original VIN off that dash fast. If you were caught with that dash down the road without the VIN on it, it may be hard to prove it came from that car.

I don't think they would drill it off, they could maybe cut the rivets with wire cutters from behind. A guess.

The article was not worded very clearly. It says they left the metal frame with the VIN. I suspect that the pad was left intact, as it was probably trashed. Sounds like it was just the gauge cluster that was stolen. They mention that he had to source a used cluster.

As for the fender tag, my Challenger had its share of rust, although not nearly as bad as his vert. I needed fenders, 1/4's, and a deck lid, but my fender tag survived in beautiful condition.

I know of a legit 1971 Challenger convertible shaker car with a 340 and an automatic. It's not my car, but I've seen it in person and it is absolutely real. I don't know where people get these numbers from either, but like I say, I believe my own eyeballs than someone telling me...................

There are many more than 1 legit '71 Challenger 340 shaker cars; at one point there were at least 4 within a 1 hour radius of Toronto and certainly many other documented examples.

The 11 Shakers number seems quite persistent, even though it would not include Canadian or Export spec cars, nor those picked up at the factory

I generally feel people who run magazines are not necessarily experts at anything other than running a magazine. If you want facts, it's hit or miss.

Make it 4 cents, Terry, agree with every word you said.

Surprisingly, the more ridiculous the story, the more people are willing to believe it.

One day I'll get around to tearing out and saving all of Ehrenberg's articles and feeding the fireplace with the rest of the stack of rags I have.

You'd think a freakin' hemi was the cure for World hunger after reading their garbage. I don't even cast a glance at the magazine rack since Moparts came along.
