I have the bottom side of my Challenger ready for paint and I am looking for a paint gun. I will most likely paint this and then the gun may never get used again. I have checked at local auto paint suppliers and when they find out what I am doing they all suggest buying an inexpensive gun from Harbor Freight.

I have many hours into this project and the last thing I want to do is have problems with the paint etc. I have no problem spending the money for a quality gun

Are the Harbor Freight guns any good? If not do you have a recommendation on a gun?

Why not just rent one then if you never plan to use it again

I used a HF gun on a small job and found it to be acceptable, not the greatest but it worked!

I have never had any luck renting tools or equipment in the past. I have tried numerous places and around here if you can rent it its junk.

I've got a good gun for final paint, but have used several Harbor Freight guns for primer etc. I've also used them with acrylic enamel, lacquers and urethanes with good results. I'd have no problem using one of their guns to paint the bottom of the car. I think the painter has more control of what the paint job turns out like than the gun. I probably use a Harbor Freight gun more than my Sata because I want to keep it in top shape for the paint jobs that really count.

Buy a quaility gun at the auto paint store and have it for life. Your'll use again if you own it and your'll never be sorry you bought a decent gun. I have several Sharpe guns.

I have never understood why someone would use a cheap gun to apply primer then think they will use a good one to apply the color especially when spraying sealer. It's what's under the color that's makes a paint job. And good equipment does make a big difference.

Just came up with another idea.......Do you know anybody in the bodyshop business, or know who's going to do your final paint? I'm guessing you're painting this at your place. Why not offer them $250.00 (or whatever) to stop by your place on a saturday morning with THEIR gun and have them do it quick. If you have it 100% preped and all they have to do is squirt the paint it won't take that awful long.

I agree 95%, I use the cheap guns for the initial blocking....when I get to the sealers and final coats I dig out my better gun. Would I rather use a gun that costs 10-15 times as much as a cheapie....absolutely, but I've gotten perfectly glass smooth finishes using a $35 gun too. I have to hand clean my guns (since this is just a hobby I don't have a gun cleaning cabinet) and I don't feel quite as bad if a little primer is still on a hard spot to clean on the "disposable" gun!

A lot of the economy guns are dead-on copies of the good stuff.
Usually in the text it will say "same as Sharpe ... or Binks model..This is what you want.
I have a jap gun I bought 30 years ago and I still like it for most things..
Just keep it clean and leave clean laquer thinner in the cup when you are done.

I painted my dragster, primed the charger, and base/cleared a truck bumper with a $20 gun from Home Depot.

I think you can shoot the bottom of you car with about any gun. It is more dependent on your skills.

though you shouldn't have any problems using cheap gun, they just don't atomize the materials as well as the high dollar guns, you can buy DeVilbiss Finishline gun from any auto paint supply store for under $100,something with 1.4-1.6 tip should work fine if you don't plan on doing any show quaity paint jobs for the rst of your life, or spend $500 for a nice gun if you plan doing more than few jobs,

just as with anything ,you get what you pay for

I bought a new Devilbiss Finishline kit off of ebay for a decent price. This is my first project that I have ever painted and I think it is coming out good. So far I have just sprayed the epoxy primer over the bare steel.

I finally realized I should not be such a cheap #%$* and I am buying a good quality gun from a body shop supply store.
