'67 Fury, 383-2bbl, all stock.
Once I start it, there's a bit of a putt-putting at slow idle, with noticeable carbon spots on the ground after five minutes or so. I've pulled several plugs, and they all look fine. I did a full tune-up about 5k ago--plugs, points, rotor, cap, set timing.

A friend who's worked at dealers his whole adult life says I should have put a MP electronic ignition on it when they were still available. But, of course, they aren't available anymore. So I'm looking for alternatives. Again, this is a stock 383, so I don't see the need to go with some high-dollar race setup. I'm leaning toward Pertronix, or maybe one of those setups D.U.I. offers. Simple is best. This thing's getting a factory dual-snorkel air cleaner one of these days, so clearing the passenger-side tube on that is a consideration.

Thanks!

Same thing as the MP kit, not that I think you have an ignition problem.

Or you can piece a stock kit together from Rock Auto for less.

pertronix is the "easiest". was the fastest thing I ever did messing with a distributor.

the cheapest would probably be that chevy spark control HEI setup.

What SC said, more in depth info on whats going on. good chance the problem is elsewhere. To ans your Q I would not go with an orange box in the MP kit but either a rebuilt Autozone point dist (they're cheap) & a Pertronix & not sure if I or II or III would be the best money spent for your app (& you might go with a stroker 451 later on down the line so a II or III might be an appropriate choice right now for your stocker) or an OE black HEI '75 chebby module mounted under the dist which works awesome (someone sells a plate for that but it is pricey & you can easily make one & use radio shack heat sink paste and an E coil with no ballast (not sure which coil to recommend) & that depends some on what module you get (there are OE and high performance HEI modules). I have a P III & a used point dist & some Lowes bronze maybe brass bushings & an adjustable reamer but I ain't got to it yet to get it assembled & see how it acts in a DD (85 Ramcharger 318)

That's interesting--if it's not an ignition problem, what do you think it might be?

black carbon spotting and putt putting is a bit difficult to say if it's normal, as a bit of it is with an old school carb and points setup, or it's indicative of the need for a complete tuneup.

plugs, points, rotor, cap, set timing is part of a complete tuneup. Did you adjust the carb too? idle mixture, choke setting, low and high idle speeds? New filters? PCV working properly? All of it applies.
