I have a 383 in a 1970 Challenger, 26 inch radiator, flowKooler water pump, 50/50 coolant, 160 thermostat. Just rebuilt has 500 miles on it.

Every time I run it for awhile and come home after shutdown it burps coolant out of the overflow tube. The temperature never goes over 180. Most times it runs around 165-175.
When I bring it in the garage and shut it down. after about a minute or so I can here it bubble up and then send coolant overflow into the overflow tube.

I lowered the coolant level.
I changed the radiator cap.
the upper hose feels firm and I hear no hissing.

It is not much maybe a 1/4 cup.
it takes about 2-3 minutes and you can hear it burp through the radiator.
Is this pretty normal? I have a overflow tank now to catch the fluid.
Thanks for the help,

You may need to lower the coolant a bit more. I leave it just above the tubes. Kevin

Normal, that is why there are overflow tanks on newer vehicles. In older ones that just puked on the floor, it'd stop puking when the level got low enough and you'd have air in the top of the radiator.

OT & this might make it kick out a bit more but just me I would highly suggest going to a 180 stat for faster getting out of the high wear "warmup" zone.

Did you add a catch bottle or a coolant recovery tank? A coolant recovery tank will always have antifreeze in it and it will need a coolant recovery type cap. Also the radiator would be filled to the top.

Thanks,
Just added a catch can for now.
I did not go the way of a recovery system and corresponding different radiator cap.

In a similar vein, I'm mounting a recovery tank and two-way type of radiator cap, can I mount the recovery tank at any level, i.e.
lower than the top of the rad?

Thought I remember someone saying no but I don't see the reasoning.

Thanks, Joe

I think it's called the siphon effect. If the cap fails to seal after it vents and the overflow is lower than the radiator it will siphon coolant out until the levels equalize.

I can see that happening with a failed cap,
but all newer cars use a tank lower than the rad. top
so I'll bet on my cap being good, (it's new).

There is no way I could mount a reservoir higher than
the top of the rad, so we'll see soon!

Thanks, Joe

Yes, it should work as long as the hose is at the bottom of the tank.

What he said, I like these cuz they are cheap and work great. Buy them online or at the local auto parts store.
