Where is the idle feed jet located? At the top or bottom of the well?
When you brake with the 6 pak carbs the fuel will slosh to the front of the bowls decreasing the pressure head at the jets. This is supported by the lean mixtures observed.
There is a thread in the racingfuelsystems forum that describes the reasons behind relocating the idle jet from the top to the bottom of the idle well on a Holley. Take a look at it and see if ti makes sense for your situation. Yep that's what I think is happening. I tried advancing the timing, raising the float level to halfway up the site hole nothing seemed to work except for nudging the idle to 1,000 in park
