The only external seal that's not accessible in the car is the front pump seal so I'd replace it while it's out. Since the VB is gonna be out you might as well replace the shift shaft seal.

Where is the front pump seal? The one you mentioned behind the converter
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

You don't need to pull the pump to replace the seal, just pry out the old one and carefully drive a new one in.
It's a good idea to pack the seal garter spring with heavy grease to prevent the spring from popping off when driving the seal.

with a hammer/screwdriver tap/bend/collapse the FP seal inward toward the center at several places around the circumference till it is weakened enough to be removed. Angle the screwdriver just right so you do not mar the pump housing. use some sealer on the new seal OD & I'd suggest packing the spring generously with vaseline. drive the seal in straight till it is flush, with as few strokes as possible. lube the TC snout with trans fluid. EDIT whatever stock you use to drive it in get something wide enough to cover most if not all of the seal width
