I took the saginaw pump from a 1975 318 to put on my 440. I bought power steering brackets from 440 source. I mocked up the front of the engine, and my ps pulley is way out of alignment with the crank pulley. It sits about 3/4" further back than the crank pulley.

My first thought was to take the pulley off and shim it, but after I got the first nut of the shaft, I could not get the pulley off, it must be a press fit.

What are my options? Is there a puller tool I can use to pull the pulley off, then place a shim behind it, then reinstall?

Or do the small block pumps have different pulleys than the big block pumps? If thats the case would it be easier to just buy a new pump/pulley for a big block?

I think I either have the right pump with the wrong pulley, or the wrong pump altogether. on top of the spacing issue, it is now obvious with the belt on that this pulley is way to short of a diameter. Unless I got the wrong belt altogether. But I got the brackets and the matching application belt from 440 source so I dont think its the wrong belt

Big blocks use a different pulley. Use a puller to remove that one. Unfortunately, to press the replacement pulley on the pump reservoir may have to come off unless there are threads in the pump shaft to pull the new pulley on.

Brackets look correct, but the pulley doesn't. It should have a shallower 3 spoke pulley to line up correctly. Like the ones shown here http://www.bpeusa.com/BPEpulleys.asp

I do not believe that it's Saginaw pump. The pulley bolts on to those with a slight press fit and key way.

I want to resell my old pump, but I don't know what style of Saginaw it is. I've heard Saginaw pumps categorized as pre-75 (early) and 75-up (late). Is that correct? what do I have?

This info is from 440 source. They sell reman pumps, both are pre 1975 indicated by the locknut and keyway attachment for the pulley. By the looks of it, it looks like "Early style can." See photos.

New pump fits well. We'll see how it performs soon. What I didn't know before was that the early and the late Saginaw only refers to the reservoir can. the pump is still the same (according to 440 source).

The only issue with the pump was the key was too big for the slot, had to grind on it some, which is a pita because it's tiny. The pump has some back and forth play is that normal?

The shaft play is normal. The cans and the later pumps had a pressed on pulley vs the keyed shaft with nut are the major differences in the pumps.

good to know. I think the press on was on the early pumps, not the late. The canned ham is the late version, which I got, and it came with the screw on nut. I prefer the screw on, easier to work with.
