Measured the lobe lift on my (mp 292 .509) cam and I came up with .363 lobe lift. Cam is in the motor (440) and I measured several lobes intake and exhaust. I'm trying to decide on either 1.5 or 1.6 rocker arms and checking piston to valve clearance. I would appreciate any input. Thanks

Just checked the lobe lift directly off the cam lobe and it was .339. Why would it check differently when measured at the lifter?

How did you measure the lobe lift? The cam lobe has a slight taper across the face, to make the lifter rotate. Measuring at the lifter will always reflect the highest point on the lobe, but measuring at the lobe may miss this.

I checked at the lifter and got .363. Checked on the cam lobe and got .339. I think I had some preload on the lifter and that preload may have caused a false reading. Wouldn't have thought that was possible.

The .339 sounds right. You figure if you round it off to .340 and take half of .340 (for stock 1.5 rockers) which is .170 and add the .170 to the .340 you get .510 lift at the valve with 1.5 rockers. Ron

well, .509 divided by 1.5 is .339...

What rocker arms did you use to make that measurement? It's entirely possible that they are not exactly 1.5:1, although I seem to recall that factory stamped arms tend to be less than 1.5.

Never mind, I saw you measured lobe lift (presumably a dial indicator on the lifter?) Did you actually see .363 between minimum and maximum indicator reading? Trying to figure out how that could happen...
