To rough sand and final sand filler, what grit paper?

I start with 80 grit in my long board air sander, re-coat if necessary, then 80 again followed by 180 with a hand board (or block, depending on the size of the repair.) Try not to cut through the plastic and expose high spots, when you start seeing metal, you need to stop. If you have low spots, fill them then, let it dry, and sand again. I always skim the whole thing again. The best results are on metalwork that is as straight as you can get it, before you put the mud to it.

Knock the skin off of it with 36 or 40, then work it down to almost done with 80. Then finish it off with 180. Don't try to look at it to see if it's smooth....feel of it with the hand you DON'T write with.

yes and no. i think most good primer would if you applied several coats (3 wet), but I like to sand with 220 then 3 coats primer, then final sand before paint. You might not cover 180 scratches with thin coats of primer or they may show through if you go from 180 to a much finer paper (400 etc)

you work your way up, from what i understand...start with the 80 stuff, when you get that good and flat, jump to maybe 180 or 220 to remove the marks from the 80. then thick coat of filler primer and block with 400 prior to color shoot, yes?

Me too, 36 grit to get it flat.

When filler is cured, it has a waxy film at the top. Starting with 80 grit will just clog and waste paper. Start with 36 grit.

The only exception might be for a very small imperfection (2-3" of area) where you wanted to keep any surrounding sand scratches to a minimum.

I finish with 180, then primer. Then I block the primer with 240 dry if epoxy primer, wet if lacquer. When it's wet/shiny with 240, you have a good chance to look at straightness and it's another chance to get rid of sand scratches. Another coat, then wet block with 400 grit.

my body work guy thats helping me has used 40,80,150,320

said doing it 1x with 150 is better than 2x with 180

40/80 on the heavy work, scuff with 150,guide coat of primer,150,2nd coat of primer, ready for 320

working good for us,its just about ready for paint now

just got all the spot weld drilling/welding done on the bed replaceing the floor/tubbing it with a cut down long bed

finishing with 180 is fine if you are using a quality primer.

I put a couple of coats of primer on the bodywork first before priming the rest of the panel.

Most important is you want to control the first couple of primer coats so the primer gets down into the scratch and fills it - instead allowing it to bridge over the scratch and later shrink down into it.

I let it cure about 10 minutes, untill it's about as hard as a pencil eraser, then hit it with a body file to get it close. Wait another 5 minutes, and it should be hard enough to smooth with 180. Skim coat, wait 10, knock it down with the 180, then smooth it out with 220. When you feel it for smoothness, put a paper towell under your hand, you will feel any imperfections much easier with the paper.

Same here, but I have been doing it almost 30 years.........as far as a sticky top layer, you don't get that if you spring for good plastic. Like Rage or Fuzion. (See Eastwood.com) 80 grit cuts the first layer very well, if it isn't 1/2 inch thick.........which it shouldn't be, if you did your metal work right.........

I've found it depends on the plastic. Just started using Evercoat Quantum 1 and it's by far the best plastic I've ever used. No need for glazing putty, this stuff sands smoooooth! If it's rough body work or a big area, I start with 36 or 40 to rough it in. Skim coat and hit it with 80. Most of the time it can be left finished at 80 if you are using a good filling primer. I start blocking the primer with 150 to level it out, add one or 2 thin coats of primer and right to 400 wet. Working on my W350, I recently tried the Clausen All-U-Need Poly Primer. That stuff will hide a multitude of sins with as heavy as it covers. Body work to rough and final blocking in one shot.

Lol............bondo sculptures.........you guys would not believe what I saw while doing bodywork full time. The most memorable was a '68 Karman Ghia. The nose, from the headlights down, was common house screen, covered with 1/2 inch to 1 inch of plastic! Oh, there was rusty metal here and there, which they must have used as a guide, but there were so many cracks in it it was all but falling off! And the owner couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to "re" repair it! Wish I had a pic!
