Been too many years for me to remember which is which. A FSM has a flow diagram. If you dont have one, join 69roadrunner.net and the entire book is online there.

hot coolant exits a BB block from the top/upper hole(s) (1) on each side & turns in to the center to the stat so the rear (upper) heater hose nipple on the pass side right there that taps down into that passage is the hot coolant "out" to the heater "inlet"

Not to hijack this thread, but is this the same setup for a 69 Hemi engine? Thanks, guys. Not a problem on the hijack, the OP has had his Q ans & your post ain't interfering with that in any way & we're here to help and be helped in any way and as much as possible. I'm 99% sure the Hemi would be the same cuz it has the same WP so it'd have the same block hole configuration (upper/lower on each side on the front of the block)

Simple, the nipple closest to the water outlet is the supply, that leaves the other as the return.
