Not the best pics, but the 383 had been together since the mid '80's. So it was due for a freshening. Caught in the nick of time. Plum wore out. Being in focus doesn't make them look any better.

So it was all fresh and new, with a new crank, ready to go back in. Which it did. Then it ran for almost 5 seconds and stopped. Then it wouldn't turn over. In the case of "I've never seen this before", the forged 383 crank was not drilled for a pilot bushing. Go figure. So after pulling the engine, replacing the thrust bearings I crushed with the input shaft, cutting the end off the input shaft of a $2500 transmission, and putting it back together, it still wouldn't turn over. So back out it came. More off the input shaft. More measuring. Back together. No turn over. So we finally figured out the two year old Year One positive battery cable was junk. Replaced, fired it up, and finally I was able to drive it.

It made it probably 200 miles on the Friday of the Nats. I'm prerry sure this pic is from Saturday night in Heath, it's a screen shot off a video of the cruising I found on YouTube. I would say I put about 400 miles on it the weekend of the Nats.

Now, for progress. It is still a running, driving machine. It is in need of a carb rebuild or replacement badly, and loaded up quit a bit after sitting during the Nats and after. So the oil needs changed, again, and the plugs need changed, again, and it needs some carb work. It doesn't run nearly as good as it should, but that will come once I really start tuning it. It feels good, but will feel better with new plugs and a better fuel delivery system. Having the engine out 3-4 times, I need to put new exhaust gaskets on it, these are roached. The front suspension and steering system should be gone through over the winter or early spring. The foundation is in place and strong, everything is new or rebuilt, now it is time to get it all dialed in. The short list: Carb rebuild or replacement. Exhaust gaskets. Front suspension Steering. That will do the safety items. Then I want to get my frame connectors in, maybe some different rear springs. More aluminum.(Dress up. I've outgrown the Mopar Performance look) Drive it...

I have already said I was going two years (or was it three) in a row now. I'll just say this time that I'm setting aside vacation for it.

pretty much the way I look at it. It's not in a million pieces, and off the road for 10+ years. Had it out today, and had a nice drive. and as long as I'm in primer, no worries about scratching new paint. agreed on the get together.
