I just switched over using from conventional Chevron brand motor oil in the road runner to 20w/50w Royal Purple's full synthetic type as I got a good deal on some.

So I drove the road runner about 20 miles and then rechecked the oil and went from a nice clean color to really dark color in that short amount of usage.

Just wondering if this normal when switching to a full synthetic?

work

Thanks
Stu

That's not been my experience but I use Mobil 1 and I have only switched over modern EFI engines.

I haven't switched a carb'ed engine.

That's likely exactly what happened. Your new oil probably has more/different detergents than your previous oil.

I always change the oil once a year and as usual it was just getting sort of dirty looking. Usually it stays pretty clean for most of the year. I would guess i put on about maybe 1000 miles to 1500 miles between oil changes.

I wouldn't.

Also if you change it every year at approximately 1500 miles, then synthetic is a waste of money for you. Use regular oil or extend your oil changes to like 7500 miles to make synthetic worth while. IMO

I only used the Royal Purple as i got a deal on it from a friend so it was going to be the same cost as regular. The car sits so much that i feel changing the oil every year is worth the few $$.

I remember royal purple didn't stay purple for long. been a while though.

I also agree. I change my oil once a year too. 30 bucks in oil and filters once a year is cheap insurance, for as little as I drive mine.

I wouldn't worry about changing it early just for a color change.
oil sample tests are as expensive as a change, so I probably wouldn't bother with that either.

I would be real careful using Synthetic in old muscle cars with flat tappet cams. Flat tappet cams REQUIRE an oil with Zinc in it. You really need a racing oil with Zinc, for instance, VR1 Valvoline, or Amsoil Dominator racing oil, Joe Gibbs racing oil. They have taken all the Zinc out of oils because it plugs up Catalytic Converters. I learned the hard way. At least put an additive with Zinc in it.

There are synthetic oils that have high anti-scuff additives (zddp/zinc or others).

"Amsoil Dominator racing oil, Joe Gibbs racing oil." are synthetic.

Superior heat protection, no doubt...

But, regarding viscosity, I'm on the fence...

Change the filter and add a quart. Using a high quality filter helps extend the life of synthetics, but you are not doing many miles anyway.
