There were engines (and transmissions) that escaped without VIN stampings which was an error and that are legitimate. However, there are other clues that are far less obvious that can be found in helping to determine if it was a factory error or a replacement engine. Also, there were examples where the VIN stamping is there but not visible, the stamper simply missed the machined pad and it's hard to see in the raw cast iron.

All that said, most restored cars you see with blank pads have replacements.

Assuming but not sure, but back in the day, you could walk into your dealer and buy a Hemi over the counter, imagine that block must of had no VIN? , other blank vin pads would of been warranty blocks , but think they came with the blue tag? Scott what are some of the other clues?

Mopar did not start using the machined pad on the passenger side until1969, the blocks didn't have that machined pad until 1969 Another thing that can be looked at for verifying phonys versus real cars is the scheduled production date and the block casting dates If the SPD is 03-09-1968 and the block casting date is 04-12-1968 something is amiss, me thinks The 1968 motors had the VIN stamped on the back side of driver side block to bellhousing mating edges I'm not sure about the 1966/1967 motors

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

There is also the assembly stampings (back by the oil pan /starter area.
Those stampings were done at marysville well prior to the vin being stamped.

Yes, all true.

Other clues are more subtle but if you know what you are looking at it's a fairly straight forward puzzle to piece together. I don't like to put too many details online, don't want to make it any easier on the crooks out there
