Can anyone tell me how I can remove the u-joints of the driveshaft? I want to powercoat my driveshaft and the u-joints has to be replaced.

I don't see any rings to be removed.

Thx!

Well there has to be rings either on the inside or snap rings on the outside.

Remove the split rings that keep them retained.

Then I use a vise and the two socket technique. One socket has to be a larger in diameter than the u joint cap. The other is a smaller diameter.

The smaller one in the vise pushes the u joint in and the large one receives the cap on the other side.

clamp the shaft moderately secure in the vice will a towel to protect it with pretty much just the end weld/ears sticking out past the vice. clips removed. drive one cap in till it pushes the opposite cap out enough so you can grab it with vice grips & twist it out/off. then drive the greasy shank of the ujoint back in the other way till you can grab/remove the other cap. Spacial awareness/frequent checking so you ain't banging/nicking anything improper

Just did that a few hours ago with a Harbor Freight 12-ton press. On the bottom side I used a 3/4 drive socket the same size as the U joint cup. A short (about 8") lever on the press hydraulic jack wasn't getting the job done. Put a longer lever on the jack, and it worked great.

For a bit more than $100 with coupon, this press is an excellent buy for many jobs like this and takes up minimal floor space.

Ask your powder coater about leaving the universal joints or at least the caps in for the coating process.
This will leave the inside surface the caps sit in free of coating.
