It has been about 2 years since I installed a 440/727 in my 84 swb truck. I have learned a lot about having a RB engine in a half ton. Fun! Just plain fun to drive.
So like the title says, the 440 is tired. The 727 more so.

My solution: 79 issue Ma Mopar motor home replacement engine that had an estimated by my machinist less than 10,000 miles on it.
The 452 heads got a 3 angle valve job and machine ported, and shaved about .010.
The block was honed, crank polished as it didn't need bored, and the crank was within spec.
The cam is a comp 268xe. I have 1.6 roller rockers to be added after the break in ( they will put the lift at .512) , along with the tunnel ram and 2 600 eddys.
I have a 727 that was a working trans at the trans shop getting a full rebuild, and tf2 kit. The torque converter is a 2200 stall.

This should get installed and broken in over Easter weekend!

I am getting really pumped about it!

If it is going in a truck, with a 2200 converter, etc. and sounds like a pretty mild motor that tunnel ram setup is probably going to leave a ton of power on the table especially at the low end... I mean it looks awesome so it has that going for it, but you would probably be a lot happier and make a lot more power and low end with a dual plane and single 4...

I'm going to break it in with my current performer rpm and 750cfm carb and stock rockers. The eventual plan is to use 2 to3/to4 hybrid turbos. The pistons are forged trws. I have another tunnel ram base with injector bungs already installed. The carbs will be converted to be throttle bodys only. I am in the process of building a megasquirt controller now, along with a stimulator.
I agree the tunnel ram would leave bottom end power on the table with the carbs. I am going to give them a try though, just for grins. The reason for the converter is to help the tturbos spool.
Boost should end up being around 12 pounds with the wastegates I have.
I have another driver. After I have the mechanicals and turbo efi lined out, the truck is getting torn down completely for chassis rebuild, rewire, paint and interior.
Saturday night cruises, rod runs and an occasional trip to the strip will be its purpose.

The old mistaken idea that tunnel rams don't work on the bottom end was the subject of some work by IIRC Freiberger several years ago.
The tunnel ram made more power below the torque peak. That's due to the ram effect, which is no different than the long and short rams of early Chrysler bigblocks, except the rams are vertical rather than horizontal.

R.

I know some say a tunnel ram wont work well on the street.
I read this thread some time ago. I intend to find out for myself. And then put pressure to it!

I ran a tunnel ram on my old 77, and I had no problem with low end torque. I chassis dyno'd it a few years ago and it had 353 HP and 487 ft lbs. of torque at the rear wheels. You'll be just fine!!
