I just finished installing my MSD Crank Trigger that I would like to run at the track, however I do drive the car on the street "once in a great while."

My engine is a 440RB with 12:1 compression, with the Solid Lifter cam specs of 262I/266E @.050, with a LSA of 108*, C/L at 105* .600 lift using 1.6 Ratio Rockers.

Heads are Performer RPM Aluminum that have been CNC ported by Modern.

I am running 12* initial, with a total of 35* all in at 2800 rpm using the MSD Billet Distributor. I am also using a MSD 7AL-3 ignition system that has built-in start-retard. 7in of vacuum at Idle @900 rpm.

430 Gear ratio as well...so, my '69 GTX is really a Strip/Street car vs. a Street/Strip.

So, should I just lock the distributor, set the crank trigger at 35* BTDC and drive it on the street once in a while or?

Thank you for the advice!

Regards, Mark

I think you have to lock it out with a crank trigger, the distributor does not control timing anymore.

Lock the dist at zero and put 35* on the trigger...
really doesnt matter where you lock the dist just
as long as its locked and set it all at TDC then put
in 35* trigger

Hi Mike,

The question is, if I want to run the car on the street once and a while, will it be OK to run the car with the crank trigger at 35*?

I do understand that I have to lock the distributor and set the phasing once I get the timing on the CT set to 35*.

With my cam specs, I guess it would be OK to drive the car on the street a little with the Crank Trigger?

Or...should I only use the Crank Trigger/locked distributor at the track?
Thanks.

You'll be fine with the trigger on the street

Thanks all for the help!

I pulled the distributor, and set it to be locked. I set the timing on the CT/balancer for 35*, and then set the rotor phasing at #1 plug.

It started, and runs MUCH BETTER, and still left the 10* start retard chip in as before, and it worked without any kickback or backfiring!

Again, thank you all!

Regards, Mark

I ran my hemi for years w/ about 25° initial and 35° total. Finally locked it out and was surprised how much better it idled. Added a collar to the distributor shaft to keep the timing steady at the same time...better, but not rock solid. Then later I added the crank trigger when I started pulling a lot of timing for nitrous. Love the rock steady timing from the crank trigger.

What is this lock you speak of? I stole the crank trigger from the 499 and have it on the 540, using a MSD for the dist.

How does the MSD get locked?

You put a zero degree bushing in it... real easy

On the MSD pro billet that I have you have to pull the distributor, drive out the lower shaft collar pin, then pull the weight assembly up, remove the weights/bushing/nut/springs, then turn it 180* and drop the threaded pin back into the main assembly.

My distributor is for a RB/440, so collar to remove instead of the lower gear.

Mine just has plastic bushings to control the advance
which is easy to change out... I have another BB
dist on my bench which I dont know who makes it but
if you loosen 2 screws and move the advance plate
you can control the amount of advance and just tighten
the screws..I'm trying to build this into my SB dist
right now... that BB dist is nice... by the way I'm
gonna sell it since I dont have any BB stuff any more

Detailed instructions on MSD's site. Not as simple as changing a bushing, but not hard at all either.
