I also had one come apart and spread aluminum throughout my transmission. This was behind my 13-second 383. I sent it back and they rebuilt it. It seemed okay after that, and actually performed pretty well behind the 383. But, when I put it behind the 451 and put a heavier dose of torque to it, it ballooned emediately and caused potentially serious issues. I ended up having to pull the motor to address thrust bearing issues. After these two issues, I junked it and opted to to spend the money on a good converter.
Now, I do have another buddy that runs one in his Dart. Less weight and less torque (12.30 car). It seems to be standing up okay in his application.
I'd be leary of using one behind anything that is going to see the drag strip. Street only, 13-14 second type car is where I'd draw the line.

I blew one up behind my 408 small block in a 93 dakota and a 904 trans. The stator got mad at me and tried to leave, lucky the flexplate and converter case kept it in place.

I have been running one in my Mustang for several years. (10.40's at 130) I bought it used and it has worked well. Supposed to be a 4000, but it stalls at 4800 in my car. I have no complaints other than the fact it does not have anti-balloon plates. YMMV though.
I will probably be replacing it with one that does have plates since the new motor should make more steam and I have considered throwing a small shot on it just for giggles.

Did a search on "George Reynolds" (GER fame) and it came up with Precision Converters and transmission..... so if you're looking for cheap krap that fails it appears to be still available.
GER Pal of mine with a Nova put one in his car. Turned a 13 second ride into a 14 second turd.

My old Demon started out with a $225.00 GER 3500 convertor ran a best of 7.38 in the 1/8. People was telling me I need to by a good convertor so I paid $600.00 for a Coan Race convertor and it lost over a tenth in the 1/8. Boy was I mad I wasted $600.00.
