I have a 68 300 with a 109K mile stock 440. immediately after starting it to move it out of my shop the oil light came on and a I could hear that low thud thud thud low in the engine and immediately shut it off. I checked the dipstick and as I feared the oil level hadn't moved as you would expect if the pump was working. My question is would you suspect the pump or the intermediate shaft? If the shaft, would it have broke you think, or just rounded off where it goes into the pump? Thoughts? Any other possibilities Im not thinkin about? Thanks.
Ken.

Start with the shaft. If its ok check the pump. If it is ok check for a lifter out of its bore.

Thanks, had forgotten that could happen. Also, if it would matter, this car "sits" most of the time, hardly ever gets driven. Just start it to move it out of the way mostly.

I had my 440 GTX idling and I lost my oil pressure. It took a lot to take apart to find the problem, but I replaced the pump and that wasn't the issue. I pulled one valve cover off to inspect and there was no problems on the left side. I pulled off the right valve cover five days later and I found the push rod went missing. I took off the intake to fix the problem and the lifter was out of the hole. I put the lifter back in and a new push rod and the oil pressure came back up.

And will add, do not start the motor again until the issue is found. What you described could be a lifter out of its bore due to the aforementioned rocker arm/ pushrod, a hung relief valve in the pump, or intermediate shaft or several other issues. Use a drill motor to run the pump ( remember CCW)

As said keep the keys in your pocket. pull dist/intergear. preoil CCW with the 5/16 hex rod & holler what happens. I would tape the area of the rod that goes in the bushing (a bit picky but thats my OCD ). first set timing marks on 15BTDC (either #1 or #6) to ease reassembly

I got a problem once after a regular oil and filter change. Didn't get pressure after a few seconds so I pulled the distributor and tried to get pressure with a drill and hex with no result. The problem showed up to be the brand new oil filter! It took me some time to figure out...

If it has a Fram filter, change it to something else, pull the distributor and prime the oil system. If it develops oil pressure, count yourself lucky that it only cost you a new filter.
