My Engine builder is steering me toward using an Holly over the Edelbrock Carb. I have a 1972 HP440 and having it brought up to 1969 HP 440 Horse power and Torque !! I like the Edelbrock and have run a 750
Performer on this engine in the past. The only thing I know about Hollies that they are not dependable and leak a lot or has that changed ??

Would like some input on this

Thanks Tom C.

You really opened a can of worms on this one. I did extensive testing with the 440 and the Edelbrock 750 (1411) and tuned it to work pretty well but not perfect. Google "edelbrock 750 stumble 440" and you will find an epidemic of problems.

I was able to get my 1411 to work with alot of tuning, an A/F gauge and jets, springs and pump changes.

I ended up installing a 1413 (800) and am very happy with it. Many others have abandoned Edelbrock and moved to the Demon or Holley and are also happy.

I think you are fine with Edelbrock but DON't try the 1411.

I have had great success with both. Holley for performance and Edlebrock for no worries. My opinion, and it has worked for me. If I had the linkage already for the Eddy and liked the way it worked in the past I'd go with it.

For a street engine I really prefer the Edelbrock/Carter carbs. I've had better long term drivability out of them.
There were many times that we tuned a Holley to be a slightly stronger performer but went back to the Eddy for better manners.

Buy a new carb. Nothing puts the damper on a fun rebuild like a balky carburetor.

750 Street Demon will work well and fits without adapters on square or spread bore intakes.

i use a factory 4618 avs on my 69 r/t. i did some tweaking on it and it starts, runs, and drives beautiful. i think the biggest problem with the carters is most people don't have a clue on how to tune them. they are far more reliable than a holley, will make just as much power as holley with all things equal, but do tune differently.

If it's primarily a street car that sits for long periods go with an Edelbrock. Once tuned for the motor they are pretty much bullet proof. Extended periods of storage and the Holley will leak like a sieve.Dave

Another vote for the new Street Demon. The CarterBrocks are okay, but they use 50 year old tunes that just do not seem to have been updated. Holleys can do okay with some tuning.

Google the Street Demon and you will see that they have incorporated several cool features that help the carb do a better job on street cars.

Can only speak from my own experience: I'll never own another Edelbrock Performer Carb. I had (2) 1411 750's. One vaporlocked as soon as the motor was warm. Both had an off-idle stumble that I couldn't get rid of (and I tried until I was frustrated). With this motor, I moved to a Holley 750, and instantly the car ran perfectly. Since then I've always gone the Holley direction, and I've always been able to make them respond to simple adjustments. Currently running an 830 DP on my 451.

If i had to own an Eddy carb, I'd go to the AVS series.

My experience- I have a 950hp Holley on a 440 and a 750 street hp holley on a 400. Both were bought new and have been on my cars for 10 or more years. My cars do sit for long periods. I have not had a single problem with either of them.

It's simple as this

If you are a weekend warrior looking to tune every single aspect of a carburetor and get maximum performance for hours and hours of trial and execution...

Holley

If you like to set it up once and have it remain like that forever...get in your car...turn the key and leave the scene...

Edelbrock

I have owned both...I had an 800cfm Holley on a 440 and it was professionally rebuilt. I even had the guy come out and dial it in to my Charger. It never ran right...I wanted to go to a car show so I took the 500cfm off my Slant 6 (modified) and my 440 worked BETTER with a 500cfm....well thats when I sold all my Holleys....Does the Holley work when you tear it apart and change the cam, the power valve, the jets, the balancing tube...YES!!! but I like to get in my car and drive it more than fix it

BTW, I run Two Eddy's 500cfm on my engine and I haven't had a single leak, stumble, or need to remove them from my engine in 5 years

When I had the 750 Edelbrock on this 440 it ran great no issues .I do no know way my engine builder wants to use a Holly ? But I am looking at The Edelbrock EDE-1412 800 cfm Recommended for High-Performance street and light strip. Mind will only be driven on the street

Thanks For All The InPut !!!

I'm a long time Carter fan Tom but the new Street Demon by Holley which is basically a Carter Thermquad has a lot going for it.

If I had to buy a new carb today my choices would be the 750 cfm Street Demon or Edelbrock 800 CFM AVS.

Cheers!

Yes.

An AVS is an AFB on the primary side but on the secondary side they used a tensioned air door in place of the AFB weighted flapper setup. The spring loaded door is the same as a Thermoquad and very adjustable.

The AFB "flapper" can be tuned but its a complicated dance between the weights and airbleed sizes on the secondary boosters which most folks are not familiar with. On the AVS it is as simple as increasing or decreasing the spring tension.

I really would give the Street Demon the nod if starting from scratch since Holley spent a lot of time getting it right unless you need the 50 extra CFM. Dyno reports utilizing the carb have given it high praise for drivabilty and fuel mixture.

I had the typical Holley. Leaked from the accelerator pump. Leaked from both ends of the fuel transfer tube. Leaked from the side of the rear float bowl. Leaked from the bottom of the float bowl. Needle and seat stuck, sprayed fuel out the float bowl vent... Finally got to the point that the truck wouldn't start (318 x2).
Edelbrock, no issues. I have a 1406, its been on two 318s and a 360. Runs great, no problems.
