got 3 of the 4 bolts in and tight, having trouble with 4th one, do you tighten each one and move to the next one or do you put in a little loose until all 4 are in centered then rotate around and tighten. what is the best method you use, thanks

I always have to leave them loose then tighten after all are in. Get them close to tight as if to much is sticking out it will hit and stop turning.

Start them all by hand first just enough for the converter to move a bit. Once all in, turn and tighten them all up. It helps to mark your converter and flex plate with a dab of paint to align it up and not waste time.

I never tighten bolts on anything till I have them all started.
The 4 holes are asymmetrical so there's only one way all 4 holes will line up. It's possible to have 3 go in and the 4th won't. I put a paint mark on the flex plate and convertor before I install.
Make sure to use blue LockTite on the bolts, convertor bolts are famous for backing out.

Where oh WHERE are the proper-torque-reading "police" ?

....as stated above ....get em all started - clean threads with fresh loctite ....then wrench em down with a box wrench and give that box a quick hit with a rubber

Lets see, the OP doesn't state which size converter bolts he using, 5/16 or 7/16 so it would be real hard to give him the proper torque specs., correct As far as the hammer, is that a small rubber or plastic mallet and a 4 inch long wrench or a 3 lb dead blow hammer with a 9 inch long combination box end wrench Is that enough to ignite the fires for tonight

...jsta' little diff .... and I am sure that C B will agree .... I stagger the tightening of those said crank bolts ... because I sure don't want to distort the crank flange with that flex plate !!

I bought an 18 inch Matco ratchet wrench just for the 'verter bolts. After I had a few loosen up and hitting the block, thought I had a ROD KNOCK!!

A thing I do is line up all the bolts outside of the car, making sure the converter and flex plate are in the right position. Then I just spray paint a line on both, makes the job really easy in the future.

I had the same thing happen to me. I was coming off of the freeway at 12 or 1 in the morning coming from a wedding years ago and it sounded like something was coming apart. The noise started like it was on a switch with no warning. I had oil pressure so; I drove it another mile or so to the house. The converter bolts were one of the first things I checked for some reason which I found odd becuase I'd never had the problem in the past. Put some locktite on them, tightened them up and never had another issue.
